Fiona Pilkington yobs protected by police - mirror.co.uk

What a pity the police did not do the same for Fiona and her daughter.

Now the yobs family are claiming harrassment...... on boo hoo hoo

Typical police....... too little too late.

The more I see of gutter press reporting like that the more I think it's the cause and not the effect.

The more that neighbourhoods fall back on "it's the job of the police" and stand back from their own responsibility, the more pervasive the problem becomes. The task of helping a family like the Simmons' to bring up their children is and always has been that of the neighbours in general, not of any council or police intervention. Pushing that responsibility away, washing their collective hands of the matter and becoming spectators instead of interacting is where the fabric of society has become damaged. Hysterical responses like those of the gutter press - and of you and Andy, come to that - have become their shield and excuse.

Rubbish...... throughout the harrassment of the woman, crimes were commited i.e. locking her son in a shed at knifepoint and punching him in the mouth. Fireworks through a letterbox is attempted arson. The police should have been there for her and arrested the yobs... then, they would not find themselves in the position they are now.

The gutter press as you call it is doing everyone a favour by naming and shaming them. It is utterly pathetic that they now complain of harrassment after what they put Mrs Pilkington through.

It's all very easy to spout on about communities being responsible if you have never been in that situation. Fear of reprisals is a very real fact when residents have to deal with yobs like this.

That's life, Oscar. Where there's no sense of community there's no local help. Where people rely on social services or the council or the police to do their job for them things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, the blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned; the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

Leonard Cohen hit the target: "As I was walking I thought it was them who were singing it, I thought it was they who were singing it, I thought it was the other who was singing it, I thought it was someone else. But as I moved along I knew it was me, and that I was singing it to myself". This is what life's all about. If you just watch then you're the problem.

I do actually agree with you about the community spirit. Ours is the house folk knock on or phone because they know we will do something about it and kick up a stink with the right people but not all people are like that. I maintain that when these yobs were holding a knife to the boys throat etc, the police should have arrested. That's why intimidation like this goes on for years unchallenged. Folk are wary of getting involved for fear the yobs will turn on them. Lack of police action leads the yobs to push the boundaries further until you end up with some-one dead. The police are paid to serve and protect and they failed her. You can bet your life though that If she had enough one night and thumped one of the yobs, the police would soon be there to arrest her.
