Autism treatment works in kids as young as 18 mos.

Post by Jazzy »

CHICAGO – The first rigorous study of behavior treatment in autistic children as young as 18 months found two years of therapy can vastly improve symptoms, often resulting in a milder diagnosis.

The study was small — just 48 children evaluated at the University of Washington — but the results were so encouraging it has been expanded to several other sites, said Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer of the advocacy group Autism Speaks. Dawson, a former University of Washington professor, led the research team.

Early autism treatment has been getting more attention, but it remains controversial because there's scant rigorous evidence showing it really works. The study is thus "a landmark of great import," said Tony Charman, an autism education specialist at the Institute of Education in London.

There's also a growing emphasis on diagnosing autism at the earliest possible age, and the study shows that can pay off with early, effective treatment, said Laura Schreibman, an autism researcher at the University of California at San Diego.

The National Institute of Mental Health funded the study, which was published online Monday in Pediatrics.

That's rather what RJ was talking about a couple of weeks ago, the question of whether untreated autists should be so disparaged in society as to treat small children to force them out of autism into better conformity with what are seen to be societal norms.

Personally, I'm not sure I approve. Either they're considered worthwhile members of human society in their own right or they're considered inferior. The OP takes the inferior point of view.

Autism Speaks want to hear nothing from the autistic, they are simply hell bent on what you said.

You can get a lot of information directly from the autistic from;

Wrong Planet - Autism Community

Wrong Planet Forums

as well as many other places. So, in the end autistics say: don't listen to Autism Speaks.

Heres what you can expect from Autism Speaks. As an autistic person I can assure you that this is pure fear and an exaggeration except of the most extreme cases which are relatively few.

Very sad (IMO) to publish these "break through" results for families dealing with this and give them false hope. :mad:

But one thing about Autism Speaks is they don't care much about the autistic, making them out to be a burden when in the vast majority of cases thats just not accurate.

Once people understand that just about all people can be put on the spectrum someplace, making autism out to be an enemy does nothing more than cause people to think that autistic people are no different than a dog or cat. Not that dogs and cats are anything bad, but human being are no higher up any ladder than anyone or any other species. This is simply a slight neurological variation, nothing more. There is nothing to be cured.

Its fine to teach autistic people how to manage life through education, but thats not what Autism Speaks believes. Before you know it we'll all be getting the now version of a lobotomy if Autism Speaks has their way.
