Babies wail in their mother tongue!!

Post by AussiePam »

Within days of being born, babies cry in a way that reflects their native language.

Research at the ultra respectable German Max Planck Institute has shown that French babies start low in pitch and go up, whereas German babies do the reverse.

These modulations apparently reflect the melody patterns typical of fluent speakers of each language.

In the last trimester of pregnancy bubs apparently hear mum's voice and respond with similar intonation....

Tres shriek: babies are wailing in their mother tongue

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted the article from The Washington Post, and the bub pic, they note, has been digitally manipulated.

Indeed they might!!

There could be a learned PhD thesis in that, if you're interested?

I'm currently working on some personal research concerning the strange and inexplicable fact that my own offspring did not actually wail at all. Instead, they sort of declaimed - in limerick rhythm.
