If I went to America

Post by Kathy Ellen »

Hi Kaz,

That's a tough question as the USA is so large.

What kind of a holiday are you looking for?

You can relax on the beautiful beach communities on the East and West coast.....The Carolinas, New England, Florida, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle have fabulous beaches.

We have fun and fast-paced cities like Washington, New York, Las Vegas, Boston, Philly, Miami and Chicago that have great shopping, night clubs and casinos.

We have plenty of National Parks....Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Grand Canyon, Great Smokey Mountains, Mesa Verde, Badlands....Ozarks.....

There's so much to do and so little time....

I think that if I was a visitor to the USA, I'd love to visit New York, Boston and Washington for history, and then head on down to the Carolinas or Florida for some fun and sun.

If I visited the West coast I'd love to visit Arizona, New Mexico and California. I'd love to see the Sonoran desert, Grand Canyon, and the Redwood forest and wine country in California.

I'd love to visit the Badlands and Wyoming....

And of course....There's Alaska....where my Dad was born before moving to Ireland:-4

"The Hood" they're within a short distance from anywhere you decide to stay.

Kathy Ellen forgot to mention "the Hood."

Please do not go to the hood kazalala...

I personally suggest staying out of the major inner cities! Well, unless of course you're "packing heat" and you're quick and decisive in survival situations! :wah:

It really depends on the time of year kazalala...For instance I've always wanted to visit the northeastern areas of the US like Maryland or New York during the fall but if you were to visit their now you'd be highly disappointed as all you'd see would be tree branches/twigs and whatnot. Not to mention would be very cold!...

Going to Florida during the winter would be quite comfortable...Obviously coming from the UK traveling to the west coast of the US would entail a very long flight!

I myself would love to visit Niagara falls but like I said the summer time would be the best time to do that!...

I've never known much to be in the southeastern part of the US aside from farmland and the occasional whiff of cow crap so I'd say take the long trip and visit the western US. Head up to the Colorado Rockies, travel up to Salt Lake city Utah and go skiing, and then go to The Grand Canyon to thaw out, that would be my choice! :yh_wink

Kaz,

Ahso was kidding....He does not want you to go to the hood...That word means neighbor'HOOD or ghetto...dangerous area...

The cities I mentioned along the East coast..... New York, Boston, Philly, Washington are lovely and fun cities. But, like any large city they have their dangerous areas. You find out where they are and stay away from them. Geeze, there are certain parts of Dublin that I wouldn't go near.....You just have to be careful in all big cities.

But yes, the Spring and summer would be so much nice to travel through the States.

The south east is fascinating from a historical point of view. The Revolutionary War, Civil War. There's Chesapeake Bay and Annapolis. Charleston. Savannah.. just to name a couple - awesome resonating places.

America is a big country, and there are just so many different flavours to absorb. Real cowboys and the desert, cactus in the southwest. The crazy creative feeling of San Francisco. The beauty of cornfields as far as the eye can see in every direction in the midwest, the mountain woodlands. Snow in the Rockies.. Washington State, and the forests of the north west. Colorado !!! Cajun country - swamps with Spanish moss. New Yorks nervous energy that never stops - the colour the excitement. Chicago, more muscular and in your face.. beautiful. The Catskill mountains in the Fall, the barren Flint Hills of Kansas, the first view of Lake Superior. I could go on indefinitely. You just have to start somewhere and take time to absorb. Then keep going back for more.

Beautifully written Pam. I love how you describe the States. You've probably been to more places here than me:D

Oh, the Chesapeake bay is gorgeous. Would love to go crabbing there and visit some of the islands within the bay where the local crabbers live.

That's interesting to hear you describe the places that I've visited and lived in some of them like the desert, the mountains in the Cowboy State and have or have had friends in all. I was born in the Flint Hills in Kansas and I've never heard them mentioned before as a favorite place to visit.

Someone asked my brother who has traveled all over, lived in Europe and the South Pacific, now is close to Washington, what his favorite place was of all that he had been and seen and he answered that he was most impressed with The Grand Canyon. I took him there 2 years ago with his wife & daughter. We also saw The Painted Desert, The Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater, Sedona & some close-by Indian ruins on that trip. On other trips I've taken him to Niagara Falls, Yellowstone Park, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco & Tennessee to mention a few. When I live close to a place or after I've visited it I think I have to drag everybody I know and love there too. :-6

Just a couple of ideas:

Summer: Fly into Boston, (or into New York and take the train to Boston), rent a car and drive up the coast of Maine, then across to Mt Washington area, and meander back to Boston.

Winter:

Fly into Miami and drive down US 1 to Key West, then back up to Ft Myers, and up the west coast to around Tampa. there are some nice places to visit along the way. One of my favorite place in South Florida is Tarpon Springs, just north of St Petersburg. Now drive across the state to Kennedy Space Center, and back down the coast to Miami to fly home.

Other idea. Colorado. Summer: Fly to Denver, drive to Estes Park, and over the continental divide to Grand Lake, and south from there, through the mountains, back to Colorado Springs and check out Pike's Peak, and back to Denver.

From around St Louis, you can take a river boat cruise up the Mississippi and Ohio river.
The home of the soul is the Open Road.

wow thanks everyone! bloomin ek i think i would need to move there!:wah: you are all so very descriptive i can practically see it. Im not really a big city girl altyhough i would love to visit Newy York etc,, probably around 3 days would be enough for me there,, i would most liekly like to see the wonderful mountains, lakes, forests etc. I love the coast also but not to lie on the beach, just to see and walk along.

MY Daughter would love to go to New York,, she had the romantic idea to get married there,, but over Christmas:wah: a winter wedding in New York, sadly her partners brother wouod not be allowed to fly that far so she has give up that idea. She loves America and everything about it, she wishes we were American:yh_rotfl

I sort of knew what The Hood meant:rolleyes:

My mam has visited America when she was in Canada for a while,, they got lost in downtown LA:eek:

Yes Kev it would be a very long flight, thats the one thing that keeps putting me off:-3maybe when i win the lottery and can go Business class:sneaky:

Thanks so much everyone again for all your time and effort here:D:-6

Beautiful Montana, from Eureka to Kalispell absolutely gorgeous and no big city to be found along the way.

Ramona California, very beautiful the desert and mountains both near by, Joshua Tree National Park, Anza Borrego National Park ooo both gorgeous.

Now if you are including Canada in the America catch all phrase

Vancouver Island is a must see, lush, lively, trendy, serene ahhhh the ocean all around you, it is peaceful with a fantastic homespun feeling mixed in with trendy and adventuresome. Victoria is a wonderful city.

If you are looking for Mountains Southern Alberta has loads of lovely small towns, the Interior of British Columbia has mountains and lakes and small towns.

So very much to take into consideration.

Just off the top of my head.

1. Jackson Wyoming

The town is unique. It has wooden sidewalks, fine shops with a western theme, top notch art galleries and the food is some of the best Ive had. But of course the main attraction is the scenery. Its surrounded by rugged mountains and endless deep valleys, wildlife, an elk reserve, world class fly fishing, horseback riding in the hills, one of the most beautiful lakes you will ever see. Lake Jenny is 400 feet deep and surrounded by the Teton range. Hiking in the most amazing scenery, it will take your breath away. The stars in the sky are worth the trip. Ive never seen so many stars in my life. You will be stunned.

Yellowstone is 2 hours away. A must, everyone should witness this.

Just when you think you have looked into the eyes of God and are overcome with the raw beauty, you come around another bend and gasp in awe.

300 foot roaring waterfalls, wildlife everywhere, bears, fox, elk, eagles, bison roaming free, deer, doe and bucks, beavers building dams.

Its a place that has the ability to reduce you to a delicate humble.

Its a place you will remember always and forever.

Nomad, your beautiful and accurate description of Jackson Hole makes me realize how much I miss it.

And what a great description of Yellowstone! I lived close by and took all my visitors there because it is so magnificent & I thought everybody should see it. On one of our trips, we stayed in rustic cabins and had 13 buffalo, bull, cows & babies come to our backyard for breakfast! I had to caution my girlfriend NOT to try to get close, as she wanted to do. They are VERY dangerous!

Come to New Mexico, specifically the Four Corners area. You'll be close to Mesa Verde, the Anasazi Ruins of Cliff cities, Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon, and the rocky Mountains. Everything from food to lodging is dirt cheap here and the people are very friendly.

Truly a beautiful place! I love Monument Valley. In May I stood at The Four Corners for the first time, although I'd been close several times. One leg in Utah, one in Colorado, an arm in New Mexico and one in Arizona.
