Sexually explicit material: What's your opinion?

Post by Despina »

There is a broad discussion about the sexually explicit material that can be found online. There has also been some concerns about how easily young people can access this material online. I'm a young woman and I have the sense that all these discussions about the topic are becoming moral panics with the help from media as well.

There are views that this material is helpful to young people (children, teenagers, young adults) because they learn about their sexuality, about the sexual activity, they can enhance their sexual lives as well. On the other hand, there are views according to which it's harmful for young people to watch this material, it's dangerous because they can be approached by strangers and it can be damaging for their sexual development, their sexuality or sexual health.

What's your view on the topic? What do you think about this kind of online material? What do you think of the public debate that is developed around it?

Why not, spot? It's another topic for discussion, or is it that you are embarassed by the subject matter ;) :lips:

As for my opinion, I haven't seen these sites, so I can't really pass a comment.

It is a strange way to introduce yourself on a forum though ! It may send out the wrong signals about you, Despina !

I only ask because she hasn't the slightest idea who we are. It makes her look like an evangelist for a cause talking to random strangers. We get lots of those signing up.

Well I've got an opinion... I hate it.

Kids as young as five are accessing that material and that just cannot be good for them by any stretch of the imagination. There's this thing that we all know is a delicate, important part of childhood.

It's called, "innocence."

We go to great lengths to protect it in some ways, like making sure that no one tells the young children that there is no Santa Claus, then we turn around and destroy any chance they might have had to discover the mystical and beautiful experience of their first sexual relationship by smearing it all over in brightly lit, deviantly horrible technicolor on the web.

Our society is seriously screwed up.

Whatever fool lets any child near a computer without something like K9 Web Protection - Free Internet Filtering and Parental Controls Software installed is entirely responsible for the result.

I'd still rather like my first question answering before we all jump obediently to the OP like lemmings.

yeah, yeah.. I know. And video stores always check IDs before renting to anyone who looks under 17...not. There are tons of stupid people out there who really don't give a damn. I saw an 8-year old renting the movie "Hostel" the other day. When I told him he was too young to see that movie (teachers love to interfere in everyone's lives) he replied, "My Aunt lets me do whatever I want."

True. I noticed that this was her first post and first thread. Are we being baited for some idiot's college project?

Good lord Saint! I'd far rather both my children 'know' what sex is all about thanks. Mystical and beautiful :wah: Give over, firsts are generally a time of complete and utter fumbling and embarrassment followed by a feeling of let down of 'was that it, was that the earth shattering blissful moment I've been promised!' And no doubt you'll tell me now that maybe I wasn't with 'the one'.

Ok! That's a really warm welcome! Thank you all! Indeed I haven't introduced my self as I should do..so,

Hi everyone! My name is Despina! Fortunately I 'm neither an "evangelist", nor an"idiot"... thank you though for being so kind. I 'm a very smart researcher and a perfectly normal person doing research on how children and teenagers use sexually explicit material...I strongly believe that above all moral panics and the conservative ideas that all of you expressed, it's their nature and innocent curiosity that win. They consume this material for a number of reasons and first of all because their parents don't allow them too. Anyway, I consider that this material is absolutely normal to be consumed by any adult with a regular and normal sexual life; as for the youth it is normal that they are curious as soon as they are informed of what that is, and what sex is and as soon as they don't access illegal and harmful of this material.

Oh, let me also note that I registered to this forum by mistake, thinking that it's for young people...so thank you for both clarifying that it's an adults' forum (in your own manner) and for giving me an idea of how I should fit myself into forums next time.

Thank you all and I 'll take your comments into consideration.

And you don't think you have an obligation to disclose your agenda first, posing a question like that? More especially if you had actually hit a forum for youngsters?

I think you ought. And I don't think very smart researchers have strong opinions on the subject they're polling either, I think that's the function of their employer. You'll get bias in your analysis if you have preconceived opinions of your own. You end up cherry-picking from text unless you're using a multi-choice questionnaire.

I'd be more concerned that everywhere girls look these days they are objectified as sexual objects. Everyone will look at porn at some stage of their lives but when it is forced upon you in all media you can't then complain about girls acting out or boys simplifying their relationships.

and what sex is and as soon as they don't access illegal and harmful of this material.

Need to ask a question on that statement. What porn sites do you think acceptable to those under 18?? what do you consider harmful?

No it is called screening. If in this day and age you give your 5 year old access to a computor that is not filtered to not VIEW porn then you need to be flogged....

There are SO many filters available, how can you blame society and not the parents.

Well, I grew up on a farm, and by the time I was old enough to start thinking about such things, there was little "mystery or wonder" to be had at the physical plane.

The part of the experience that, to me, was "Mystical and beautiful" as Saint put it, was on the emotional and spiritual planes.

Not that I disagree with keeping my grandkids away from all the horrid junk available to them on the computer.

Hell, I use the filter just to protect my own ragged and tattered innocence.

There are some things out there no one needs to see.
