How did you decide what you wanted to do in life?

Post by lady cop »

how many of you have dealt with bullies? i was discussing this with my brother tonight, he reminded me of two incidents in our youth...one was a neighborhood bully, 16 year old male who terrorized all the kids, they would walk an extra mile to school to avoid him. i was 13. one day i could not abide it anymore, i beat the living hell out of him like some berserk weed-whacker.imagine the humiliation for him! HAHA. he never bothered another little kid and his mom used to invite me to dinner all the time after that! ----second incident was more serious. my parents were just across our little road at a new year's party. i was babysitting my young brother and sister. someone broke into our basement window, i heard it. this was an 'upper-class' area! very unusual. so i called the police and then got a huge butcher knife from the kitchen and waited behind the door at the top of the basement stairs, fully prepared to stab him. i was 10. i heard him on the steps. i raised my knife. then sirens tore through the night and i heard him retreat. he was 12 feet from me. well i often think i should have known then what i was going to be. (but i didn't). i was dreaming of academia. when in fact i wanted a sword and shield.

LADYCOP,

That explains why your such a great law enforcement officer, it was your destiny.

For me I never had a goal of becoming a Director of Information Systems, or a Database Manager. It just happened, I love computers, and just have a knack for it.. have been in the field since 1972, each day I learn something new.

My dreams growing up were to be a HAIRDRESSER, OR A TRAUMA ROOM NURSE.. Well I worked in a hospital for 22 years, saw my share of TRAUMA'S.. I worked in a Salon for several years. I'm actually very good with scissors.. ;) If I was young I would become a TRAUMA ROOM NURSE FOR SURE... LOVE MEDICINE, JUST WASN'T SMART ENOUGH FOR MED SCHOOL..

My 'career' is kind of like my buying shoes. I go into the store and ask for my size in the shoe I like. They don't have it. I find another one. No size 10. Next. Next. Next. Finally I find a shoe in my size that I can tolerate only to realize that I never really liked it a few months later. On to a different shoe store.

That analogy probably sucks but there it is. I still don't know what I want to be...though cold heartless bitch is starting to settle on me quite nicely :D

For me, I think I just found something I was interested in and pursued it. It started out in my small home town as I joined the local rescue squad. I had to take a short first responders class for that. I wanted to learn/do more, so went to EMT school. After that, still loved the work so went to paramedic school so I could do even more. I think if I hated it or got interested in something else, I would have pursued that avenue instead. There is nothing else I would have rather done and no regrets for my time in EMS.

I picked my initial career while in the 9th grade. I found a book on careers in the school library and read through it. I was interested in Egyptology, mummies, embalming, archeology. The section of the book dealing with the "Funeral Industry" went on to expalin how there would always be a need for someone to prepare the dead for disposition and burial and to provide assistance to the bereaved. I figured I would always have a job. I had two mortuaries on my paper route and would visit with some of the staff about the business. So, after military service during the Korean War, Uni & a specialized college to learn embalming and funeral directing I got licensed and went to work.

I don't think anyone makes tending bar a goal in life. I wanted nothing more than to be a stay at home mom, but then hubby went on comp and was off work 18 months. For the sake of my sanity, I went to work. Started out in a pizza shop, got offered a better job in a store. Went there, got promoted to shift manager. Loved it, but got offered a better paying job tending bar. Better pay starting out than after almost 5 years at the store. Been doing it for 2 years, taking care of all the legal, computer, and paper work for the gambling for about a year.

I always wanted to travel - to see other countries, cultures and people.

At school my best subject was geography and I spent hours at a time reading about foreign lands and studying atlasses, maps etc.

I graduated in electronics and joined a company which was heavily involved in electronic security work in different parts of the world.

I spent many years both traveling to and living in foreign lands in the course of my job and will always be grateful for the fact that I had the opportunity to visit so many different places.

It's a very true sayiung that'travel broadens the mind'.

I just realised that my earliest clear memory is going to a baseball park and there was this really cool place beside the park where kids could go in, pick a three sided wooden box and build stuff with the wood lying around. The guy there gave out hammers and nails. I started building simple furniture etc. and stayed there during the entire baseball game. Now I'm a construction worker learning interior finishing.

I hated public speaking. Really hated it!!! I thought about how much more difficult it must be for someone to communicate and speak in front of people when they have communication disorders. From there...I became a speech pathologist.

I have had 2 major careers - one as a TV director - very fun, and one as an environmental scientist - even more fun. Right now I'm a retail manager - hate it every day of the week 52 weeks a year. My next career is retirement - hopefully within the year.

Hmmmm...I guess being a teacer has always been my destiny, I just never knew it until I came back home after my father died.

In the Air force I was an Instructor pilot. I wanted to be a nuclear bomber pilot, but the Air Force told me that my personality was better for being a teacher. so I was assigned to Vance AFB for the next six years as a T-38 Talon Instructor.

After I went into the reserves, I worked my way up from a kitchen manager to a regional restaurant manager, then one day they came to me and said, "We'd like you to be the International Training Instructor" and set up our new stores for us. Again...a teacher. I traveled the world teaching new crews to run their operation.

I moved back to my home town after my Dad died to take care of my mother, she said, "Why not try substitute teaching?" I did, I loved it. When the school system found out about my credentials, they voluteered to pay for my classes to get my third Bachelor's degree, this time in Education. So I became a Math Department head for Mesa View Middle School in 1994.

I've been happy ever since, it's what I was born to do...obviously apparently.

Did I mention that both of my parents were teachers? And that I swore an oath never to follow in their footsteps? :o
