Has anyone else read or heard anything about the minute men? A volunteer group of americans going to the US-Mexico border and watching for people trying to come across? I can not believe the amount of flack these people are getting. When the fedaral gov't won't do it, i think it becomes necessary for ordinary citizens to step up. In an effort to draw attention to the problem.

saw it here in the UK on Fox, so I would not say it was a balanced report. As I understand it these guys have no powers as such but just observe until the LE officials show up. I guess the border patrols would have to be increased by about tenfold to cope with the length of boreder the USA has.

The Minutemen are doing a superb job and their effectiveness has been such that there are calls for the project to be extended in both time and operational area.
The illegals are putting a huge strain on social services including hospitals in the areas most affected.
Der Wulf in AZ might like to comment. The area around Phoenix is one of the worst affected areas.
Bothwell - you say you saw a report on a Fox News Channel but thought it might not be balanced.
Why do you think that?
Fox has the fastest growing TV News Channel in the United States and has an excellent reputation. The company also provides 6 widely viewed sports channels.

The longest unprotected border in the world is between the US & Canada. The Minutemen project is a dream come true for white supremacists. David Duke, the Klan, Aryan Nations and other violent racists are all for this vigilantism. I wonder why they aren't on the Canadian border! The racist character of the Minuteman project speaks loud and clear on that question. Shame on the US for encouraging this hateful violent atrocity.
"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group that believes you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas millionaires, or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." PE, to my eyes they are anything but fair and balanced. Remember I get all my news of the BBC which does a pretty good job of remaining politically neutral although it is sometimes rather liberal for some peoples taste. When I see a show like Hannity and Colmes I just shudder. Sean Hannity would never ever be allowed to do a political interview over here. He is just so out and out anti Democrat. I do however enjoy watching Shephard Smith. I think it is just a case of what you are used to.

Hi there B.
Sorry to hear you are unwell.
As you say - it depends on what you're used to.
I'm afraid the BBC is far too left-wing for most Americans.
Weren't they the subject of an investigation recently due to their misinformation activities over the war in Iraq?
If you get a chance watch John Gibson on Fox. He has an evening news slot and his 'My Word' piece really tells it like it is.
You can also visit the Fox website at Fox.com and read his and others' take on the political scene.

What you say might be valid were it not for the fact that Canadian citizens are not trying to move to the US by the millions. The numbers are on our southern borders. Some of the people working with the Minutemen are Hispanic themselves. The Minutemen are not vigilantes any more than you would be a vigilante for reporting a crime when you saw it.

Violent and hateful???? what in the Blue Hell are you talking about David??? No one in the minute men is projecting any kind of violence toward the border-jumpers. How can you say that? What stories have you heard from the liberalist, left-wing media that leads you to think that?
The thing about all of it that really ticks me off is the ACLU getting involved on the behalf of the jumpers! I have nothing against the ACLU helping actual citizens of this great country. I mean, their name is American Civil Liberties Union. Isn't it? But why are they more apt to help ILLEGAL immigrants than those trying to come to this country Legally?

They were, standard of reporting perhaps left a lot to be desired but the basic essence of the story was correct-intelligence reports were altered to make the case for war convincing.

The BBC is supposed to question the actions of the government, given half a chance TB would probably like to control them-currently they are independent with a remit to present both sides of a story-that means we exopect the bbc to ask them to justify what they are doing and pointing out when they tell lies. If being critical makes then left wing then good. Do bear in mind Labour are supposed to a left wing party.
What do you mean by left wing? The way it seems to be used in this forum by americans it seems to be anything critical of government policy. Here you have left wing, centre left, far left, loony left (in which david813 would find a home but would get his head kicked in in glasgow for supporting the ira)
Same with liberals-why are people who believe in individual freedom become such pariahs in the states-looked it up in Websters it does seem to mean the same american english

The opposite of liberal is not good at all
