Patriot Act

Post by Wolverine »

This well intended, but misguided knee-jerk reaction to the 9-11 attacks is coming up for renewal in the senate this year. And it has been expanded, giving the Federal Gov't even more wide ranging powers. One of the new additions is the Library Bill. In which the Federal Government can go into any library look at anyone check out lists at any time for any reason. And they don't have to notify the public library that they are coming. This applies to book stores also. Under the new law the store clerks and Librarians have to oblige the Federal agents or be arrested and sent to jail as well.

If this new version of the Patriot Act goes through, how much longer before the Gov't can come into our very homes to see what books we own, what Forums we post on in the net, and what we say about the Gov't?? Because if it gets as bad as many think it will, everything I have just said could be viewed as treasonous.

Orwellian does not even come close to describing this. Our government had a go at this a few months back, detention without trial, no eveidence to defend etc and got a good kicking in Parliament.

Freedom must be defended at all costs, it's a short step from seeing what books we are reading to burning them on the street.

And the Lords, Never thought we would have to depend on a bunch of unelected peers to defend our freedom or the european human rights act. If ever there was a need to show why we need a separete independent judiciary all you need to do os point to this government and thge number of times the home secretary has been overuled by the courts.

In Canada we have had a taste of this with the ernst zundel case. While his views are somewhat odd - some people would say atrocious, he never had a chance to a fair trial, to face his accusers (who they were was never said!), and there were never even charges specified against him - he was somehow listed as a 'danger to society' thaanks to special interest groups (he's over 80 years old!). It's a sorry day for a free society when something like this is allowed to happen.

I feel bad for my American friends and relatives....the draconian Patriot Act crushes many of the Amendments to the Constitution - it was prepared PRE - 9/11 and pushed through with not one reading by any Senators or Congressman......the intent is quite clearly to me a clampdown on the liberties of the American people!

yeah there was a rough draft floating around the House of Reps. And once congress remembered to breathe after 9-11 it was rushed into the senate with almost every one adding their own amendment to it along the way. This is one of the Scariest laws ever put on the books. Think McCarthyism of the 50's put into law.

Anyone, foregin or domestic, citizen or visitor is subject to this thing. The Homeland Security Office doesn't need Probable Cause, there is no such thing as illegal search and siesure, all they have to go on is a suspicion that you may have done something wrong. You don't get a speedy trial. You aren't even supposed to know what it is they are looking for, or why you have been arrested. And forget about calling a lawyer. Just scary man.
