This one's for Oscar

Post by Kathy Ellen »

Hello Oscar:-4,

Right now I'm enjoying the lovely town of Siesta Key, Florida. As the sun sets over Siesta Key, Captain Styles, a USA Navy Vet, who unfortunately passed in 2008, gathers together all the neighbors and visitors, to pay homage to all of the USA vets and thank them for all that they have done for our country.

Now that Captain Styles has passed, his neighbors and grandchildren have taken over this homage. I have watched this homage since I've been visiting Siesta Key which has been about 10 years.

Even though I've watched this event for the past 10 years, there were still tears in my eyes listening to everyone sing all the old war songs. All of the vets were thanked for their service. They ended with playing taps. As I looked around there was not a dry eye to be found.

I was thinking of you and your Dad, knowing that you would have been very touched to see how all of the community and visitors payed homage to our vets. I said a prayer for your Dad.

Here's a link to his site, and there's a wee video showing part of the homage.

Welcome to Captain Styles

I took some pictures and will try to download them to FG. It will take a wee while to do....Hope you like the pictures and thank you for all that you do for all of our veterans.

Oh, and by the way Oscar....While I was saying a prayer for your Dad, I saw the beloved parrots that disappeared a few years ago, come back to the birdfeeder in Captains Styles' yard. The locals were smiling to see them home again. I think your Dad wanted to make everyone smile to see them:-6

These are pics of some of the people singing the war songs, lowering the flag and playing taps. The people here are the captain's family and friends.

THANKYOU KATHY

A wonderful homage to an amazing man. My Father would have been so Interested In this. They fought with so many Allied Troops but as my Grandmother had the only Pub In the Village where they built the US Air Base, my parents never forgot the US allied troops they met.

I really do appreciate you doing this for me and saying a Prayer for my Father. I know that all Dad's are hero's In their Daughters eye's but each and every war veteran has a story to tell and It's why I'm so Involved with them.

I will get out some old black and white pics of my Father and post them up.

Every-one of our age would have relatives or parents that served In the war but It Is only through parades and rememberence services such as the one you have attended that keep their vision alive today and enable us to pass the Importence down through generations. That's why I commend you for taking this trip... We must never forget them.

This Is Mr O doing his bit on Rememberence day.

Thank-you again Kathy :-4:-4:-4

The returning of the Parrots seems significent... I wonder If they knew?

Thank you Julie:-6 That's a lovely picture of Peter:-4

It is important that we always remember to appreciate our vets and say thank you to them;)

One of my closest friends Linda, who has since left teaching and is living about 2 hrs. from Siesta Key;), always put on a "Veteran's Program" for our school when she lived in 'Noo Joisey.'

What a wonderful program she put on for our school. Most of the vets were relatives or neighbors of our 6th grade students. These vets served during WW2 and the Vietnam War. Each one of them would stand up and talk to the children about some of their experiences during their service time. The whole community was invited to this program and many showed up to say hello to the vets.

Each vet received a standing ovation, a thank-you balloon, lots of hugs from the community, and a lovely breakfast in one of the 6th grade classrooms with their family and friends.

btw....Linda and family are coming to visit me Siesta Key this week...wooohooooo...I can see a gabfest 'acomin':-4

I was very honoured to march along side this old Tank commander who Is 97 years old. He led the advancing tanks Into Northern France. He probably won't make It next year but I do so hope I see him again.

It's very sad to see the old timers go Julie. That's why we need to teach the young about our heroes. I was happy to see so many children watching this ceremony for Captain Styles.

On Veteran's Day, Linda brought a busload of kids to the local parade and cheered our vets on. Then they came back to school and put on a lovely assembly program for the Vets.

That's awesome. I believe that as we lose our Veterans as each year goes by, we should honour every one of them. There will come a day when we have none left.
