The company that runs most of the car parking here in Brighton has just raised prices up to £5/hr to go shopping in the city centre. That works out at CDN$7.66/hr or US$7.20. Do they charge where you live for parking when shopping or is it free? Since the minimum wage here is £5.93/hr a lot of people can't even park their car and go to work for the day...

What's public transport like in Brighton? Is there a park-and-ride option on the outskirts?

HI FUBAR, nice to see you back!:-6
Our shopping centers, malls never charge for parking.
however some streets do........another government grab.:-5
and downtown charges $20.00 which is a flat rate, whether you park there for 10 minutes or all day.
Hospitals also charge for parking.:-5
that's a lot of money just for you to shop.

I have seen £1/hour here and there across the country, but it's generally free. I have never paid £5/hr to park. IIWY I'd vote with my feet, by either avoiding NCP car parks, or not shopping there. That £5, for just one hour, should buy you fuel to get your car 10 miles there'n'back to somewhere else!

Considering the time cost and inconvenience of "park and ride", it's probably easier to just burn a fiver or so's worth of fuel, and shop elsewhere.

I grew up in Canada so paying to shop is a bit strange for me. Lucky both the missus and I work near town so can park for free but £5/hr is a bit steep. If I had to pay that I'd drive somewhere else or not park in the parking lot. My idea was to send a few thousand e-mails to the boss of NCP and the local council..

As you have just had the first member of parliment appointed for the green party in Brighton this is probably a dastardly revolution in a bid to make all the oiks leave their gas guzzlers at home.
Out of interest, which part of Brighton are you living in? Moulsecoombe, Whitehawk, Woodingdean, Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs ? Or are you one of the Hove elite?
As an east end London boy myself, i can remember the days of boarding the charabang for the works outings to Brighton and it was a pretty pricey area back then. I believe the parking prices you have there are no different to any city as you need a second mortgage to park for the day in down town Bristol car parks. The wife was in Brighton very recently visiting and she did complain about the parking charges there when she took a young nephew to the pier and aquarium for the day.
