Far enough that the EU stops dumping good food rather than give it to those in famine hit countries.

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.

That chap used to be a children's Television presenter, I'm not sure how he's qualified to speak on behalf of anyone.

This opens a great debate. For the past number of years I have been somewhat involved in the support of Ethiopia and though my experiences have come to my own conclusion. This sounds radical but it is a growing belief even in this poverty stricken country.

Stop helping.

NGOs have become multinational companies and these charities make millions every year.

Poverty is a profitable business, sounds terrible but it is true.

Countries that are in the cycle of repetitive poverty are also in the cycle of requiring foreign aid and expect it. Do you know that is it more expensive to stay in a major hotel chain in Ethiopia than it is to stay in the same hotel chain in New York? How is this possible? Because NGO’s and government money is spent on putting people up there and there is a lot of money to do so.

These countries need to stop depending on foreign aid and need to start taking care of themselves. Ethiopia is country the size of France and Spain combined and has many many natural resources that could self sustain it, but the government does nothing, because it sits back and lets the NGOs dig water wells and build schools. Yet they spend billions on their military budget every year.

People should not be allowed to starve, I agree, and they need help, but the help needs to come from their governments who are usually corrupt and self serving.

We have dug ourselves into a hole and we can’t get out of it.

I do not say this out of not caring; I say it out of experience of being actively involved.

oh that's cool you have a long experience in volunteer works.

and to be honest with you, I posted this thread in a goodwill, I'm not taking money or something from that site for what I do for them.. I just don't like people to suffer from hunger..

thank you for sharing your experience :)

I see two separate activities here, the first is providing food to a country that is in the midst of a famine or support during a disaster such as the Haiti earthquake or the current floods in Pakistan - that is an essential support service and should be maintained for the duration of the crisis and be geared towards helping them rebuild the infrastructure needed to support thenselves.

The other is the provision of "aid" to countries who prefer not to spend their money on the survival of their people whether it be through war, attempts at over-rapid expansion or lining the pocket of the leaders.

Where food is shipped into a country at prices lower than the farmers can grow it the only result is that the farming infrastructure is destroyed and, as you say, creates a self-sustaining market for the suppliers.
