Counterfeit Bill

Post by tabby »

I was doing a little Christmas shopping this afternoon and was in the process of having my purchases rung up by the cashier when another cashier came over to her with a query. It seems she had been given a counterfeit $20 bill by a customer and she didn’t know what to do with it. She said she was going to give it back to the customer but my cashier told her that when they had their training, the policeman told them to take it and then contact them. They went back and forth with it for a few minutes. Ultimately, she went back to her cash register and gave the bill back to the customer and told her it was counterfeit. The customer opened her purse and pulled out a bank envelope and said she had just come from the bank. The cashier said to go back to the bank and tell them they had given her a counterfeit bill. The customer paid her with another $20 which was apparently legit and then left with her purchase and I assume she went back to the bank.

I have no retail experience so I don’t know the proper procedure for the cashiers. Anyone here know? I’m guessing it varies from store to store. I was a little surprised that a young store clerk would recognize it as counterfeit but not a bank teller.

Hmmm... banks have machines that scan EVERY bill that they handle so her story makes me suspicious right off the bat. I think she might have been trying the old "If they take it, good, if not I'll use one of the real bills" trick.

The proper procedure was, of course, to stall her and call for store security or the police.

Interestingly enough, the next day the local newspaper had a headline story about an arrest made during a traffic violation. The car was speeding and when pulled over, the driver had no valid driver's license. During a search of the car, $220 in counterfeit bills were seized along with some marijuana. I'm sure counterfeit bills are in wide circulation especially this time of year. Poor fellow ... success can be so difficult for the independent entrepreneurial businessman! :yh_wink
