No black, greys and browns for these people! I like the photo of the "Young Armenian Woman 1905". The front of her dress looks like velvet. Gorgeous! It appears that her photo and the one above it were taken at the same site.

One has to assume, I suppose, that Prokudin-Gorskii would have used color stock had he been able. It's not an unreasonable assumption.

That expedition must have cost as much as several small towns.

Was color photography possible then? If it was I am quite sure the cost would have been tremendous. At that time I sure he got a lot of support from the establishment considering the trouble that was brewing. The Tsar and his people were trying real hard to keep things together and such things in the papers and journals might serve to create a sense of pride in what is. What is also notable is the amount of distance he had to cover to get these pics.

I've looked him up and I did him an injustice, his original plates are color images.

Your exhibition link says "For this exhibition, the glass plates have been scanned and, through an innovative process known as digichromatography, brilliant color images have been produced" which I took to mean they were originally monochrome. I think it's a very misleading comment if they actually weren't. Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky is pretty convincing that he did take color photos on that massive tour of the Empire.
