Amazing...

Tonight I was taken Ill and a Doctor from Frenchay hospital's ' Frendoc' phoned me at home about 7 pm.

He decided he wanted me to go In and see him so he made an appointment In Outpatients for me for 8.30 pm

I arrived on time, checked In at reception and was called 5 minutes later at 8.35 pm.

The Doctor gave me a thorough examination, took all my vitals, and prescribed pain relief after a bit of a chat.

I was home by 9.20 pm

I find that quite amazing In times when all people do Is complain about health care.

A friends daughter went to see a doctor and waited almost an hour to see a nurse who recommended a skin specialist. She never saw a doctor. Her insurance got a bill for $320.

What the hell?

That sucks big time !!!

I didn't mention that my treatment last night was free?

I hear so many people diss the NHS In the UK but that's not the first time I've had such treatment so quickly at my local hospital.

I had an appointment with my consultant last week at the hospital and walking In, there must have been 40 people In that waiting room and my heart sank but I was seen within 10 minutes of my appointment time.

Of course we do have a different health care system to the USA. My husbands ongoing treatment In our hospitals Is second to none also.

We all pay from the time we start work in installments according to our earnings.There are no worries during times of major illness or accident about how much the Bill might be......there is a relatively small charge for Prescription medicines although many are exempt.

Any of us who have worked have paid Installments from our wages for National Insurance I agree but this country has a health care system where a tramp who has never done a days work in his life Is treated exactly the same as I was last night.

There Is no differing care on status, we all get treated the same from the high earners to the unemployed.... that's what I mean by free.

Here's the options for me if I was similarly ill in the evening.

First-------None of my doctors would be available to return a call until the next day

Second----I could go to one of four "Urgent Care" offices within 5 miles (usually in shopping centers) and be seen

within 10 to 15 minutes----payment generally $75----$150 paid by Visa or Master Card or cash

(reimbursed by private insurance if you have it) or if age 65 or older they will bill Medicare.

Third-----If no private insurance or Medicare you can go to the local hospital "Emergency Center" and go through the

TRIAGE procedure which could take from 10 minutes to several hours depending on the severity of your

condition.

I would be eligible for option # 2

That also sucks Lon...

My Initial call was returned by a Doctor within 10 minutes and I'd only rung for advice. He stayed on the phone to me asking all sorts of questions for a good 10 minutes and then decided better safe than sorry and booked me In to see him.

No, not ladies things.... Going In hospital for surgery. They're keen to get me In before Christmas... just waiting on the date.

I'll be alright, I'm a tough old boot but thanks for giving a s,hit anyway.
