I was told by an ophthalmic surgeon that the Royal Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons subsidises the distribution of drinks umbrellas and that every Â£1 spent generates Â£20 in eye hospital income. He was shockingly drunk when he said it, mind.

I read it was originally used in Hawaiian cocktails to differentiate the type of cocktail.
