Bertrand Russell’s “Liberal Decalogue

Post by Oscar Namechange »

Do not feel absolutely certain of anything.

Do not think it worth while to proceed by concealing evidence, for the evidence is sure to come to light.

Never try to discourage thinking for you are sure to succeed.

When you meet with opposition, even if it should be from your husband or your children, endeavour to overcome it by argument and not by authority, for a victory dependent upon authority is unreal and illusory.

Have no respect for the authority of others, for there are always contrary authorities to be found.

Do not use power to suppress opinions you think pernicious, for if you do the opinions will suppress you.

Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

Find more pleasure in intelligent dissent that in passive agreement, for, if you value intelligence as you should, the former implies a deeper agreement than the latter.

Be scrupulously truthful, even if the truth is inconvenient, for it is more inconvenient when you try to conceal it.

Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool’s paradise, for only a fool will think that it is happiness.

Always worked for me.

Of course Russell was from back before "Liberal" became a dirty word.

It's only a dirty word in america. Why that should be so I would put down to the prevalence of newspeak in america but since you may be from one of the states that banned 1984 for being pro communist (oh the irony of that) you might not be familiar with the reference.

That is an opinion I can't actually back up I would be curious as to what you think the reason may be.

What an odd coincidence. I picked Russell's first volume of autobiography from the library this afternoon to read again, my own (unlike myself) being in Bristol, and found this previously unseen thread while looking for a place to drop a quote onto the site rather than start a new one.It became second-nature to me to think that whatever I was doing had better be kept to myself, and I have never quite overcome the impulse to concealment which was thus generated. I still have an impulse to hide what I am reading when anybody comes into the room, and to hold my tongue generally as to where I have been, and what I have done.

Russell, Bertrand. Autobiography. 3 vols. London: George Allen and Unwin, 1967-69: Volume 1, 1872-1914, p.38.

He was in his nineties when writing these volumes, they're all the more impressive given the span of time he looks back across.
