Embryonic Research

Post by Philadelphia Eagle »

Yesterday the House passed a bill loosening the restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research which, it is felt, will advance knowledge into possible cures for conditions such as Parkinson's, MS, Altzeimers and other neuriological disorders.

The bill was passed by 238-194 and now moves to the Senate.

The House vote fell short of the 2-thirds majority required to overcome a veto.

President Bush has stated that he will veto the Bill.

The Senate majority leader - Bill Frist (R-Tenn) is also an opponent of the Bill.

The arguments for and against are well known with pro-life supporters against and proponents of the advancement of medical research very much in favor.

Nancy Reagan is a strong supporter of the lifting of restrictions as her late husband - ex-President Ronald Reagan suffered from Altzeimers Disease.

I'm all for it, knowledge is never good or bad, it's what you do with it that is good or bad. I think it will help many people and I personally, am hopig it leads to a cure for RA. (which I have.)

I understand it both ways....I do not beleive that a woman should concieve to just use the embryo to save anothers life..As I see that as a baby...But they have several thousand frozen embryos that are unclaimed and want to use them for research..I say yes...As a lot of you know, I am currently waiting for my neice to give me her "cord" blood from her baby for my stem cell transplant..My immune system has failed greatly in the last weeks and November seems like a far way time..I beleive that life is given to live each day to the fullest and with restrictions on research, but not the war - where is takes away life....our goverment has things way screwed up!!!!!!!!! :(

Skittles.......the blood that is in an embryo and cord..is the purest blood..not infected not damaged..it has the ability to create news cells inturn the cells that cause disease can be gotten rid of and new grown..Which means when you carry a difficient cell....EX: RA, Cancer, MS - we can be healed becuase it creates kind of a new body for us...? Did I explain that well? - If not I can try again...Its hard to read about it when it has terms you are not use to reading...It is really a WONDERFUL thing - but has pros and cons just like everything else...Eagle can u explain it better???

No -I can''t do better than your explanation Mominiowa. You've summed it up well.

Someday Skittles, you'll understand especially if you are unfortunate to develop one of these diseases which can be cured by stem cell research.

I do sincerely hope that you never ever get such a condition.

You see, what you have to understand is that the embryonic cells that are "harvested"(as sad as it sounds, although it is just stem cells reproducing themselves via mitosis- nothing really "human" about it) are only Five days old.

Nothing HUMAN ABOUT IT? - It comes down to your beliefs. once again - and I beleive that a child concieved then aborted- to heal another - is wrong...They had some people wanting to conceive and then abort to use the embryo---It's MY opinion - nothing more...but 5 days old or not - if it is concieved out of the womb..then so be it..but they have doctors using human bodies for this..not labs.......

Maybe I am missing something here, and I realize I know very little about stem cell research, so this may sound like a stupid question, but here goes: The material (for lack of a better term) that is "harvested", can it be gained without harm to the fetus?

Mominiowa, I gather that the cells you are waiting for will be obtained and then the baby born, full term. Is that right?

HMMMMMM..

How much is Ireland doing on stem cell research?

You say that as if we aren't putting any effort into it.

This is about federal funds for Embryonic Research. It does not restrict state or private companies from doing their studies.

I believe Ireland, Germany and Austria ban ALTOGETHER the destruction of human embryos to create stem cell lines...........

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm all for stem cell research. Do you think if abortion was illegal in this country we would be arguing over this kind of medical research? I think medical research would be left alone and we would all benefit from its advances into cures for some very devastating diseases. I do believe a cure is far less expensive than years of treatment.
