Car Insurance farce

Post by Bruv »

I am a non driver, know nothing about cars or car insurance.

Last weekend my wife stopped outside her daughters house to drop off a letter.

With the letter delivered she got back inside the car to continue her journey.

My wife spotted a car reversing from the forcourt of the house toward her, she reversed, but the car managed to hit the drivers door and front wing.

My wife phoned me and her son, her son who lives locally arrived in minutes.

He took details of the other driver and they returned to our home.

I said they should notify Police, Insurance Company and maybe visit a Doctor, just incase.

The Insurance company didn't contact us until my wife enquired, and only then on Monday a photographer arrived and took photos of the damage.

After no contact my wife phoned them on Wednesday, to be told that the car was, in their words "A total loss" and a lorry would be along to cart the car away, and we should clear any personal items from the car. A repair would cost more than the cars value. Based on the earlier conversation a cheque would be in the post for full settlement.

Anyway a cheque arrived less excess, less the £97 to buy the car back, for a sum of £157.00.

I got on the phone and asked how it works ?

Somebody cosmetically damages our car, we then have to pay £97 out of a total £250 odd settlement and the aggro of having to retest the car due to a C grade right off........or something.

No mechanic has looked at the car....................I very nearly swore at them, cancelled the claim, told them to forget we contacted them, and the cheque was being returned.

My wife's son bought a wing and a door for less than £50, and today they have agreed the claim has been cancelled.

Are the Insurance companies as big a criminal as the bloody Banks ?

I feel a lot better now.......thank you for listening

She should have notified the her insurance company straight away, doesn't matter whose fault it was it's up to her to tell them look at your terms and conditions - in any case the other driver might not notify his company in which case with no witnesses you are up **** creek. You don't say the value of the car but a new door and wing plus spraying and fitting is several hundred pounds at repair shop. If your car is worth less than that or close to it then it would be written off.

You never get what the car is actually worth to you, there's not an awful lot you can do about it, it's a pure business transaction and you're not the one with , realistically your car is only worth what someone else will pay for it if it's at the point that the repair bill is more than the car is worth if you can afford it it's probably time to get rid of it.

I don't think any car is worth £20,000 but many do, six months later they are worth less than £10,000.

I agree entirely with your frustration. Its happened to me in the past. Why on earth do insurance companies ask you what the car is worth when insuring it ? It has no bearing on any payout. Surely they need to reimburse you, what you would have to pay to replace what you have lost. THAT is the correct and moral way to conduct this business

Dealing with these people feels like a scam

Because I have been on my wifes insurance for about 4 or 5 years (no No-Claims Bonus) and have had 3 points for speeding (4years ago) an insurance company quoted me £1930 for a years insurance on an 11 year old car Third party only.

Car Insurance farce

My wife passed her test 5 years ago, this is her first car, no accidents, no speeding tickets, only the odd parking ticket.

She paid £1,800 and has a few scratches and bumps, but uses it to travel 40 ish miles to work, as an on call health worker perhaps twice or more a week.

The car is worth more than the cost.

What wound me up was the fact no mechanic came anywhere near the car, only photographs were taken.

So after a short conversation they decided to pay out the list price, take off the excess, subtract the fee for buying the same car back, and then send a cheque.

So we then had to repair the car, and pay for a test to get it past the C catagory right off, so the car is legal to go back on the road, otherwise it would flag up as illegal and uninsurable if driven.

Its about time we nationalised Car Insurance like Health care.............why not ?

They are obviously trying to discourage claiming for relatively minor bumps

No, no, no, Bruv...have you seen the way health care is going?
