Here's a thought about the new Bedroom Tax....

In 1662 under King Charles 11, the government Introduced a Hearth or Fireplace Tax.... result... everyone bricked up their fire places....

In 1664 to compensate for people bricking up their fire places, a duty was levied on people with two or more chimneys Instead. Result... people took out their fire places and chimneys.

After 27 years, the taxes were finally abolished In 1689 by King William 111

But 7 years later In 1696 , he Introduced an even more ridiculous tax..... The Daylight Tax. Property owners and tenants were taxed on the amount of windows In their house.

DAYLIGHT TAX

Now here's the thing.... 2013 Bedroom Tax. If a room has a window, It Is classed as a potential bedroom....

You know what to do folks...

Do you still have your telly tax? I guess so, taxes are rarely revoked once implemented. To me, it was like Big Brother, to see those vans with antennas fishing for unlicensed tellies. I had no reason to fear, I followed the law. & I remember authoritative letters from your gov't reminding me what I was allowed & not allowed to do on a student visa. That's why your stories of some of your more crazed immigrants fascinate me. Your gov't seemed to know my every move & I was not used to that.

It's a Television Licence Anne, it helps pay for one of the most prestigeous broadcasting companies in the world, their world news service is still a world beater, and something else the Brits are proud about.................although some might whinge about it, just like the Health Service

How about just sticking a washing machine, ironing board or computor in your spare room and call it a utility room, wouldn't that work ?

I'd much sooner pay £145 a year to the BBC than a penny to Sky.

Someone somewhere will find a loophole. The utility room could work

Remember that the people affected are those In social housing. I've never known a council house etc to come with a utility room. The government are not that stupid, hence the ruling that even dining rooms can be classed as a potential bedroom. The rule Is, If It has a window, It's a potential bedroom.

It was never explained to me that way. I always thought it was for just having a TV set. Makes sense now.

Do you not need to get permission from the Housing Association to make any sort of changes to their properties?

I can just see them approving hundreds of requests to replace windows with bricks :wah::wah:

Not always... depends on the Individual council for the area. Some used to allow long term tenants to make such changes providing they made good when vacating the property.

My OP was tongue In cheek.... I found the olde taxes very Interesting compared to today's tax.
