Man Goes Missing in Florida…When Bedroom Falls Into Sinkhole | Video | TheBlaze.com

Does anyone have any news of this poor man ?

I have been glued to Fox News In the small hours and the last I heard was they had given hope of him being alive.

Any further news?

He is presumed dead and there will be no further searches for his body because the ground is too unsteady. For safety reasons, they demolished the house yesterday and I believe I read last night that part of the neighbor's house was also affected but I don't think any action has been taken to demolish it yet.

Thanks for the update Tabby.

The last I saw was his family sitting out on the front lawn just waiting and waiting. It was just awful. As Acc said... That's a horrible way to die.

I was surprised to see what a problem sink holes are In Florida.

Horrific!!

Is there no protection or some sort of detection available ?

Surely building on piles or rafts or something, or sonic detectors to predict such events.
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

Couple of things came to mind when reading about that.

Anyone ever see Ant Lions?

and there was a movie back in the fifties, (Invaders from Mars, I think) where the Martians invaded, and they would capture people by pulling them down through the dirt into their underground tunnels.

I think there was a scene in one of the Star Wars sequels that played on the idea, too.

Anyway, there are a lot of sink holes in Florida.

A lot of Florida sits on Limestone over a huge underground aquifer.

It is kind of like the Ozarks must have looks a few million years ago.

There's been a lot of sinkholes in Florida but none have ever killed anyone to my knowledge. I guess that's what you get for going nuts in the real estate department. Build build build. I was in Issaquah Wa just today inspecting apartments and condos built on the side of cougar mountain on terraces. The place has significant drainage issues, on one end there was a small stream coming out of the wall behind the garbage bins and running down one of the drives. Many of the lower terrace first floor apartments have been condemned due to mold and moisture problems, the small strip of land between the building and highway is a swamp.

As I stood in front of the rental office at lunch having a smoke a large tree up the hill fell. There was no wind. Strange. I would not be surprised if that whole part of the mountain slides into the valley some day.

There also was a TV show in the 90's, Earth 2 where the planet's native species — a race called the Terrians lived underground & pulled people under too.

Yeah, I remember that. It was interesting, at first, then it rapidly got weird. then it disappeared.

Tim Curry was kinda fun.

Out of Interest, how far down would he have fallen ?

I see now they are talking of filling In the sink hole...

Is there any possibility he could be alive down there?

Here's some more sinkhole information. Plus I read somewhere this morning that the family thinks rescuers didn't try hard enough to recover the body. I suspect they did everything they could without putting additional lives at stake particularly since they seem convinced he's a goner.

The Science of Sinkholes: What You Should Know - The Daily Beast I appreciate It was very dangerous for rescuers but he could have been alive... badly hurt yes but he could have survived the fall.

On the news tonight I saw them dirt filling the hole... It's just the thought that he could have been alive.... horrible

I think I read that they tried microphones and all kinds of stuff but there was no signs of life. Lesser of 2 evils I guess.

His brother said that he could hear him screaming for help then silence but you're right, he could have just been unconscious. I'm still a little puzzled about the whole sinkhole phenomena because it seems like different articles on them show different of kinds of holes and soil. Do they ever fill back in by themselves? Could he have been sucked under a sandy soil or one like quicksand? The more I read on the subject, the less I understand!

That would make for a good sci fi story - man falls through a sinkhole only to find himself in another world. :yh_think
