Take a look at your own discretion, a two year old toddler is knocked down and then run over again, before after 10 minutes somebody comes to her aid.
HERE
Is this a particularly Chinese thing, or could it happen anywhere in the world in a busy market/city ?

At one point a reference is made to the obsession with moving up the economic ladder. I can see self serving people doing such a thing, capitalism breeds such mindsets, it will bring out the lowest in all of us. This does seem to be a phenomenon found most often in China though. Strange.
Take note that one of the lowest people on the social ladder even bothered to help. A street scavenger.

I don't know that this could be considered unique to China.
I am pretty astounded by the lack of concern many people showed in that film, but I have seen similar lack of caring for another person, even here in the US.
Not quite to that graphic and extent, but, perhaps, only because there are not as many CCTV cameras around here.

I don't think It Is unique to China but I do think totalitarian regimes who censor and monitor Internet and media produce a desensitised nation.
Syria, Somalia, Turkmenistan, Libya, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia are places where people suffer from some of the most severe, systematic abuses of human rights on the planet. But considered the worst on the planet Is China.

Why were the parents so lax in watching this child? A little one just wanders outside by herself? If this happened in a Western country we would all be screaming for the parents' heads. We wouldn't think to bring up the economic or totalitarian environments.
And no, I don't think this is unique to China. Nothing is too unique anywhere anymore.
A friend of mine has visited Cuba and found the people to be warm & welcoming to all.

Good point, if it was the US the mother would probably be facing charges, or whomever was the caretaker at the time.
