Complication Of Birth?
A friend of the family has a daughter who has a child that is one year old. Several months ago she began to have problems with her left leg. She went to the doctor and they said she was having problems with the vein (the vessel which returns blood to the heart) in her leg. I guess there is a natural check valve which does not allow the blood to move back towards the feet. Last week they removed the vein from her leg, the entire length of her leg.
Has anyone ever heard of this? Is this a complication of birth and pregnancy? It seems strange to me. The birth of the child was normal, the woman concerned is/was healthy and fit. What do you think of this? I don't know of all the specifics but this seems weird to me. Why remove the whole vein? Don't we have the means to repair these valves in the leg?
What gives?

I think they must know what they are doing Scrat. I have the same problem, of course I'm no baby! but with me they were able to use stents, last year. They failed & I am being re-stented with much better results. I don't believe this will harm the baby in any way, I have heard of this many times before, the removal I mean. Of course it is with adults, but they were able to resume their lives. It wouldn't have happened, I don't think, as a birth complication, but as the baby formed in pregnancy.
Good luck to your friends & the beautiful baby. I hope everything works out & probably will.

Her son is one year old next week. Just what is the problem do you think, what causes this? This lady was very healthy before her son was born, she's 27. Is there a medical term for it?

This isn't right
Not sure if I should get involved with another medical thread my knowledge/experience seems to piss others off - we have delicate flowers here. check out the current threads.

I believe your experience are stents for glogged artries/veins.? no?
I would never allow the medical society to remove a healthy main blood flowing vein.
it's not varicose veins.
I believe someting else is wrong - removing this vein will not be the last complication your friend will have.
What pills did they put her on? She should've had other evals before this procedure.
I don't dare say anymore

The remove the entire vein If there are abnormalities In the vein that restrict blood flow to the heart. It's a good safety measure especially In babies If the vein Is not free flowing for what could be a variety of reasons. They will know what they are doing and would not put a baby through such a procedure uncalled for. The vein must In some way be restricting blood flow and they are unable to regualate It.

Oscar, if I read the OP correctly, its the mother not the bay that had the vein removed. I'm sure though that it is a fairly common surgical procedure for some like varicose veins. I know they are more common in older people but certainly not rare for a woman of 27 and I think it may be a consequence of pregnancy

That's how I read the OP and post #3 appear to confirm it but the responses confused me.
If it is the mother then I would suspect that it's a varacose vein due to the pregnancy which is not uncommon but if it's the baby then I'm out of my depth medically - I'd guess some form of genetic abnormality but I'm no doctor.

Same applies... If the vien Is twisted, knotted and dangerously restricting blood flow to the heart they will remove the whole vien... My Mother had It done.

I read it wrong too but in any case it seems to be an easy fix. Some people are more prone to varicose veins anyway and pregnancy can exacerbate it.
Scott & White Children's Hospital - Varicose vein stripping (Surgery)
I wouldn't be concerned, Scrat.

It was the mother, not the baby. He's just over 1 year and he's a complete tyrant, nothing wrong with him. 27 lbs too. Really healthy and he will be tall like his mother. Thanx Snooze. Everybody apparently made it sound much worse than it really is, I guess it was just varicose veins that got out of hand.
