The never-ending quest for a truly GOOD watermelon

I'm pretty much thinking I'll have to make the drive

over to the HOT Sacramento Valley before I have

even half a chance at getting a watermelon like I

remember from my childhood.

All that's sold around here are those they call seedless,

which really, truth in advertising should be called

'late maturing seeds' watermelon. They are just

okay in my book. I've just purchased only the 2nd one

this summer, and I'll eat it, but dang, I miss the ripe

red juicy sweet ones!

Anybody out there eaten a really good one this summer?

What Is the flavour of yours like Val? We get them In England Imported and they always seem rather bland to me.

Have you tried the farmers' markets? I agree with you on the taste of the selections you can find in stores, but I have had good luck in the farmers markets in Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. I suspect that some of the same suppliers sell up in your area (although I could be wrong, of course).

Hard to describe, Oscar. Just overall not nearly as sweet. And I do know

how to pick them, had no problems in the past.

Wandrin, I have tried farmer's markets, a couple of years ago I

paid an exorbitant sum for a Moon and Stars which was pretty good,

but the FM closest to me doesn't have them much, presumably

because they don't sell well, expensive and hard to transport

back to the car?

The Sacramento Valley is pretty toasty this time of year. Make sure your AC is working well. I'd suggest trying the farmers market in Berkely first, but there is that whole bridge problem right now (or so I hear on the news).

Don't wanna try Bezerkeley, bridge closures or not!

Oscar, a watermelon should be heavy for its' size (pick up a couple,

there IS a difference even among similar sizes) since that tells you

it's full of juice. The other thing is making sure the spot where it sat

in the field is yellow in color.

Some people thump them, and I've done that, too... but the two

above hints work best.

Valerie, we've had two varieties this summer.

One was a small watermelon called Little Baby Flower and it was good but not nearly as good as ...

the more traditional Crimson Sweet. This was the best watermelon I've eaten in a while. It was a larger variety and sooo sweet. It's like the watermelons that you remember. Delicious!

I lived in Sacramento for quite a long time and I was completely spoiled by all the beautiful produce. You'd be shocked at the produce here, you actually see moldy fruit in the supermarkets. The produce managers back in California would have been ashamed if that happened on their watch.
