For a long time it was believed that the model for this portrait was the actress Ellen Terry (1847-1928) in her most famous role of Portia.

In fact it is the 19th century actress Kate Dolan dressed in the costume that Miss Terry wore in Act IV of the play.

Although very little is known about Miss Dolan it is thought that she was a contemporary of Ellen Terry.
