Whatever Happened to the Women's Liberation Movement?

Post by jones jones »

It began with the Suffragettes in the early 1900s and gained momentum in the 1960s when it was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement and the anti Viet-Nam war Movement.

Activists like the late Mrs. Christabel Pankhurst & Helen Gurley Brown, Gloria Steinem and a host of other ladies both from the west and the east, the latter at great personal risk, championed the rights of women.

In the west ladies like Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Anne Sweeney, Ellen DeGeneres, Michelle Obama and even ladies like Angelina Jolie and yes Lady Gaga have great influence.

In direct contrast, women in the Muslim world are still treated like second class citizens and for the most part are considered incubators for male children.

Women do have power and this was demonstrated after Victorian period when outdated constraints were imposed on them, but by the 1920/30s, a very short period of time, they were on an equal footing to their male counterparts.

However today in the twenty first century, even in the west, women are not accorded the same rights as men. Monetary rewards in sport are still unequal and in commerce salaries are still not on a par.

Today but to a lesser extent, women still sell themselves short and consider certain roles to be the prerogative of men.

In my home I do the cooking simply because I enjoy being in the kitchen and my partner and I shop together, make the beds together but sleep in different bedroom because I snore! And we are both very happy with this arrangement.

Check out this pair of smokin’ dames on their motorbikes in Britain, 1930s.… Way to go ladies!
