Sleeping
All of my life I have suffered from severe sleep deprivation or so I believed.
It has affected my life because most of It, If I didn't get my 8 hours, I felt ' I was owed ' an hour here and there.
Sometimes after a really bad night and feeling quite murderous, I would have to go for a power nap mid afternoon.
Mornings where I have to be up at 5.30 am, I'm so worried about over-sleeping that I almost dare not fall asleep.
Rather than feel tired all the time, most of life, I have absolutely Insisted on sleeping pills.
This week, I had a very long consultation with my GP, he's told me he wants me to come off the sleepers and try to accept that ' I do not need 8 hours'. He's told me to stop worrying about how many hours I get every night and just sleep when I want to and when I can.
I don't know wether to be annoyed with him or relieved that after all these years, the hype of needing 8 good hours a night Is not key.

I have found I need less sleep as I get older.
I rarely get to bed before midnight/one am and up most days by 6.30.
I can sleep in to past 11.00 weekends though.

I can sleep in to past 11.00 weekends though. People do that as they get older... my elderly brother In Law goes to bed at 7 pm and gets up at 3.30 am every morning.
Another problem I have Is that I will fall asleep when I go to bed but wake up 2 to 3 hours later. Then I can't get back to sleep so I get up, raid the fridge, get on the Internet and by the time I feel ready to go back to bed, I'm so worried that In just another 2 to 3 hours I have to be up for work, I lie awake worrying about over-sleeping. Meanwhile my husband sleeps right the way through all the lights going on etc etc

I've never been able to sleep well, I'm one of those that can lay in bed for hours without being able to fall asleep. My wife is asleep before her head hits the pillow (at least thats the act) LOL. I deleted the next part of this post, to keep from incriminating myself.

I am another to whom sleep does not come easily. My mother once told me that I have been like that since the day I was born.

When I was a bit younger I used pot to help and it helped a lot. Now days Pot is not as accessible, still keep a little around for a little help.

I have seldom had trouble sleeping.
In fact, our family motto: "When the going gets tough, the tough take a nap."
I have slept through all sorts of stuff. When I was in the Navy, Our squad bunked right under the flight deck of a carrier, next door to the retrieval cables. During flight Ops retrieval, the planes hit the deck, caught the cable and it slowed them down. Then these big-ass steam powered winches reeled the cables back in so another plane could land. Awful racket. After a year of that, I could sleep through hurricanes and earthquakes. Even slept through Andrew.
About the only time I can't sleep well, is in a new hotel room when it is too quiet.

I have never taken pot nor do I drink alcohol.
4 hours sleep last night and now I've done a mornings work, I'll go for a nap before going back to work this afternoon.
Have to say that trying to not focus on how much I haven't had Is hard and breaking the habit of a lifetime.

I usually sleep well unless something is troubling me and then I have a hard time turning my thoughts off and drifting into sleep. I wish I could offer some suggestions for you but I'm sure you're tried most everything. Good luck and I hope after a time you'll be able to sleep though the night. How long has it been since you've slept at least 8 hours without interruption?

This Is the thing Tabby... I don't have money worries. My bills are paid and my life Is good In that I don't really have anything to worry about so my mind doesn't race at night and It's not that.
There's been times when I've done a days work gardening and physically I am absolutely exhausted yet still wake up 3 to 4 hours after going to bed.
My brother reminded me today that I have done that since I was a child.
I can't remember the last time I slept 6 hours without sleeping pills. What my Doctor Is saying to me Is that I have to accept that I am just one of these people that can get by on four hours sleep and that's all I need. The problem Is trying to stop feeling that because I only had four hours, I am owed sleep and must go for power naps In the day.

The only way for your doctor to know that is if he/she tracked your sleep cycles. Are you going through the complete progression? (N1->N2->N3->REM) Most people will do two full progressions during the night.
Here's something to try (if you want). When you wake up after 4 hours, get up. Go to a different room, turn the lights on, maybe check your email or something. Have a couple of crackers and maybe a banana. Wake up. After doing this reset, go back to bed. Think of it as taking your nap early, if you want. Essentially, you'd be doing a reset and starting the sleep process over again. It has worked for me on more than a few occasions.

I normally sleep in about 3.5 hour cycles, two a night. I go to bed around 11 pm, wake lightly about 2:30 AM, go back to sleep, and get around 6
If i have to stay up really late, I can get by with one cycle pretty well. So if I have to be somewhere at, say, 8 AM, and don't get to my hotel until after midnight, I can get by going to sleep by 4 AM, wake at 7:30, dress and grab a cup of Joe, and be onsite at 8, ready for a full day.
I have had to get by on 3 hours of sleep a day for up to a week, sometimes. When everything is done and I get home, though, I end up taking a day to just sleep, or laze about, and recharge.

Wandrin.... I do get on my laptop and raid the fridge when I get up In the night. But, when I get back to bed, I am so aware that I only have 2 to 3 hours left, I am almost frightened to go back to sleep because I have to be up at 5.30 am for the first school run and I just can not be late. If I were such as 5 minutes late, I'd make his parents late, the taxi driver late and the school late.
I've taken sleeping pills most of my life because that's the only way I can get 6 to 8 hours continuous sleep and not want to stab someone In road rage during the afternoon.

I have a book beside my bed. I'll usually get two pages read before I drop off to sleep. sounds great doesn't it?.......it's not because when I do a course and I have to read I want to fall asleep.:wah:
But there are other times of insomnia that really piss me off.

Why don't you buy a very loud and annoying alarm clock and leave it where you can't just stretch out an arm and turn it off. Better still get two in case one fails, I use an alarm and my mobile phone's inbuilt alarm set ten minutes later in a different part of the room, even if I get up turn it off and go back to sleep the other one gets me up.
Currently I'm getting up at five am every morning I find if I go to bed too soon I just waken up early, can't get back to sleep and end up too tired the next day. Get on better if | sleep for a couple of hours of an evening, that tends to be really deep sleep not just dozing and is very refreshing., my wife is now under strict instruction not to wake me to tell me I'm sleeping and should go to bed. I then go to bed around 11-12pm It's not the number of hours you have but what type of sleep that matters. I'm sure we've all been tired while driving, stopped and slept for half an hour or so and awakened really refreshed because it was a deep sleep. Everybody is different why on earth would you think something is wrong if you don't sleep for six to eight hours continuously? Daily mail perchance? I need a lot less sleep than my wife she goes to bed couple of hours earlier than me and sleeps right the way through. What does leave me knackered is if I am wakened from a really deep sleep, we have a cat or something coming in to out garden around 2.30 every morning. It wakes the dogs and they wake me but my wife doesn't hear them moving about occasionally they start barking - that's a fox I think. They are now banished to the other end of the house with the door shut on the room so they don't disturb me - we used to let them wander around the house.
Sleeping pills are addictive, hopefully you are not also being prescribed pills to keep you awake - used to be a common pattern with some GP's in the sixties and seventies, turned a generation of women in to junkies on uppers and downers. J

If you want a good night sleep
1. do not eat after six pm
2. go for a walk or jog so you become naturally tired.
3 have a bath or shower before bed
4.Make sure your sheets and bedding are clean............there is little emphasis on clean bedding people don't understand how important it is.
