buying a tablet ' technical overload'

well im finaly getting old :yh_rotfl i used to be quite good on all this stuff but its simply passed me by,

id set out to buy myself a Kindle for xmas yes i went looking and asked advise

now i have no idea what to buy lol kindle ipad samsung tablet god im confused

maybe ill just stick with my little 10inch acer :-2 and make doo..

or ill listen to what you users ' use ' i dont need a computer its just for basic web browsing

music movies ebay the usual stuff

If you intend to use your local library check you can access their service with a kindle.

I've just received a Kindle Paperwhite and I'm quite enjoying using it.

Having been a member of PGDP for some years my first destination was Project Guttenburg where I picked up several books I'd long wanted to read. I think PG will keep me going for a long while.

I had always thought that having an electronic book would be a nightmare. I spend most of my day reading from a screen and it is far more difficult that from paper - often I'll pring a document to review it on paper before keying my notes back into the softcopy.

With the Kindle the screen is, as per the claim, paperwhite and as easy to read as paper.

Then there's the convenience, I'm currently carrying about twenty books in a package about half the weight and a quarter of the thickness of the average paperback. Within each of those books I can highlight and reference any words or passages that take my interest which automatically updates an index document - from the index I can cross reference between books and jump directly to the marked passage. Another feature is the ability to call up the dictionary definition of any word just by touching it.

I've not yet tried buying a book from the Kindle Store, I have that pleasure to come, but downloading a e-book from one of the several sources via a PC is simple or you can e-mail a document to your Kindle and it will be loaded automatically.

The Kindle Paperwhite is purely an e-reader - I don't know about other models like the Fire.

Underneath the covers, the Kindles are Android tablets and can do most of the things that tablets do. It takes a bit of fiddling to show the non Kindle features, but they are there.

I use my iPad to replace paper subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, as well as a book reader. My local library has a collection of e-books and most technical books from the publishers are less expensive in e-book form. An added advantage for tech books is that the e-book version is updated.

I also use Pocket and Readability to save articles I encounter on the web for future off-line reading. My iPad also has a GPS and maps, in addition to various campground directories and other useful info.

While I still use my laptops for serious work, I like the portability and ease of use of a tablet. Sitting in front of a campfire with a good book is very enjoyable and a tablet doesn't make me hold a flashlight to read it.

a Kindle started life as a electronic book ' down load books ' other than buy a paper book like normal people lol

but its taken on quite a jouney since then..its now a ltd computer, you can store Music watch movie's store and

edit photos, browse the internet i belive if im right its ltd to what sites you can go on just like a android phone

you can play games download apps for all sorts of thinks its now GPS so i assume its got mapping facilities

and the list goes on ..The one i want in the New Kindle fire HDX 32gd also has 4g 8.9 screen BUT i dont think its arrived in the UK yet ... so ill have to wait ...no worries im not in any rush

I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas the first year they were out.

I can now carry around all the technical manuals for the equipment I support and refer to them quickly, while working on the equipment, or meeting with customers. I can carry several books for entertainment, and read at my leisure. It also has a web browser and I can play games, keep in touch with family, check email or even watch a movie almost anywhere I can find wi-fi.

Of course, now, I have a lot of that no my phone as well, but the Kindle has a larger screen.

I still love a real paper book, but they don't travel near as well as the Kindle.

I have a new Windows surface that I like so far. A couple things I like over the Ipad is the real keyboard if you want it and the usb port. It's easier to tranfer files with the usb port. I'm still learning cause my wife always has it using it as a laptop. So its good for that also.

im getting a bit mad with windows get a lot of freezing with my browser , ive tried firefox and google

chrome and they seem just as bad , hence fancying a change, the new kindle i think has a mirco USB

I think ive made my mind up , just got to wait for it to hit the shops

Personally, I think something like this makes a lot of sense. Just slide your phone into the tablet and you have a bigger screen. One of the prototypes I've seen (different mfr) had additional internal memory in the tablet side, microUSB connector, and a mating keyboard. The tablet has its own battery and can recharge the phone.
