Florida, There are times when I miss it

Post by LarsMac »

I grew up in South Florida.

Basically, if you ever saw the movie Porky's you pretty much saw where I grew up.

The last year was a fairly normal one for Florida.

Here is a review of the last year's best stories from one of the TV Stations:

Only been to Florida like three times for deliveries/pick ups. No time to stick around. Two things which struck me was it's so flat it is and the strange vegetation.

After reading the article maybe just as well to not to tarry in my duties while in Florida.

"Why would you want to live someplace boring like Nebraska compared to here, where every day when you open the paper you're going to see something astonishing?" Pittman said. "Weird stuff happens in other places, but not nearly as much and not nearly as often."

Boring is good. Nebraska sane.

I had enough weirdness living in in California. I don't know if I could handle Florida.

Seems to me astonishing is the wrong word for those stories in Florida.

Better abnormal or freakish.

There may be an argument that Marissa Alexander received an overly harsh punishment.

An argument ensued, and Alexander said she feared for her life when she went out to her vehicle and retrieved the gun she legally owned. She came back inside and ended up firing a shot into the wall, which ricocheted into the ceiling.

Gray testified that he saw Alexander point the gun at him and looked away before she fired the shot. He claims she was the aggressor, and he had begged her to put away the weapon.

A judge threw out Alexander's "stand your ground" self-defense claim, noting that she could have run out of the house to escape her husband but instead got the gun and went back inside.

[State Attorney] Corey says she believes Alexander aimed the gun at the man and his two sons, and the bullet she fired could have ricocheted and hit any of them.

Marissa Alexander Gets 20 Years For Firing Warning Shot

To me warning shots brings up images for shooting into the air or ground not at or near someone. Either way warning shots are normally considered assault with a deadly weapon, as well they should.

I believe that Alexander simply missed her target.

The case of Marissa Alexander is hardly a good example for those who want to legalize warning shots.

She was behaving stupidly. Not sure 20 years was warranted, but that is another story, altogether.

My problem with this is each time someone uses a gun, and is charged with a crime, it should be handled strictly on the evidence of the particular case.

Making a standing rule, one way or another, or sentencing based on guidelines never really can be considered just.

To just take this and the Zimmerman-Martin fiasco

Two people being stupid with a handgun.

the one that actually killed someone walked, while the one that missed gets 20 years. How weird is that?

Here is another Florida Story:

Pharmageddon: how America got hooked on killer prescription drugs | World news | The Guardian

Back in 2003, I came back from a trip to the UK, with a DVT, and ended up in the ICU. That night there was another patient in that spent the time yelling and moaning and raising a ruckus. kept us all awake.

a couple of days later, I was moved into a shared room, and this guy was my roomy.

He was an old guy who had been over prescribed on Oxycontin or something. I heard him tell the intern that he had been taking 1500 mg of Oxy a day.

His doc was arrested shortly after that.

When I was released, my doc was going to prescribe 10 mg for me. I asked about that 1500 mg the guy said, and Doc told me I must have heard wrong. 100 mg is enough to put the average patient into a coma. But then he said, yes, some people had been known to build up a resistance and need significantly more to ease the pain.

I declined the scrip, and said Ibuprofen works fine for me, and if it doesn't, I'll just deal with the pain.

But Florida has become ground zero for this stuff.

They pass it out like candy.

Very important important differences.

Zimmerman was attacked. Mr.Zimmerman on his back, drew his gun during what the prosecution witness described as a "ground and pound". There was nowhere for George to retreat.

Marissa Alexander left, was safe from attack. She then came back and shot at Rico Gray, then claimed self defense.

Nice try Marissa.
