Could he be called a 'fox whisperer' ?

Post by G#Gill »

Chris and the fox.

We were just sitting and having a chat about all sorts of stuff, then Chris, my hubby, remembered the fox that trotted by our back garden fence one night. It was fairly late one balmy summer evening, when most sane people had retired to their beds. Chris was just standing in our small back garden, which over-looked a kiddies play park. At the outside corner of our ranch-type fence was a street light, one of 3 which lit a public pathway that went all along the outside of the gardens of the line of houses.

While Chris was standing there looking at the night time view, a male fox came trotting along this pathway, slowing to a walk as it approached the street light by our garden fence. It was aware that there was a human being standing on the other side of the fence, and seemed a little nervous. Chris didn't move but started to talk to the fox in a quiet voice, (almost a whisper even ) , and the fox stopped. He was standing beneath the street light and he looked towards Chris. He made no move to go away, but after a minute or two sat down. He seemed to be listening to Chris's quiet soothing words and Chris said he noticed that the fox's eyes were half closed. Chris carried on with his quiet, soothing talking and after a few more minutes the fox curled up under the street light and appeared to go to sleep !! Chris kept on talking in quiet low tones and the fox remained curled up and obviously unafraid. Fortunately nobody wanted to walk along that pathway or along the road the other side of the play park, and strangely there were no vehicles at all passing by to disturb this delightful scene. Chris stood there for nearly 20 minutes talking quietly and the fox remained curled up, and for all the world, asleep !!

There was the sound of somebody putting some tins into their rubbish wheelie bin and closing the lid. This sudden noise made the fox instantly stand, he glanced at Chris through the fence then quickly trotted away and out of sight.

There are often foxes wandering the area at night , but we have no idea if our friendly fox is one of them. I hope so, and I hope he thinks kindly of the humans that lived near that street light.

Your Fox In my experience, I have seen before, but not that common.

People tend to believe that Urban Foxes have become bolder over the years and would argue your Fox Is the proof of that but what I always say to that Is, next time, you try picking him up :wah:

Anyway how did Chris know It was a male ?

As Mr. gmc said, it kept it's mouth shut. :lips: (actually, gmc, I thought that was very funny LOL ) It hadn't got any lippy on, or mascara and he wasn't carrying a handbag ! :yh_rotfl (mind you that isn't always a pointer these days, is it ? :wah: )

No, seriously, he was a beautiful huge (for a fox) handsome animal and he had a magnificent and very bushy brush. I suspect he had eaten his fill not long before and was feeling rather sleepy and 'laid back'. I believe the vixen is naturally smaller than the dog fox. I did see the fox from our sitting room window, and he was the largest fox I had ever seen !

Sounds like he had his winter coat.... was It darker In parts ?

Yes, Vixens are generally smaller but often mistaken for Dogs when mid winter and their coats are thicker.

I often see mine curled up under the wall asleep when I go out to feed them.

For Chris
