Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
I've always been unsure about this one. One of my grandmothers saw ghosts her entire life, from the time she was a small child until her death. It was common place to hear her talk about the different things she had seen. On the other hand, my other grandmother, laughed at such ideas. She always said that when you die you go straight to wherever you're going. If you go to heaven you don't want to come back and if you go the other way you can't come back.
See what you think of this. My maternal grandmother....the one who saw the ghosts...has 9 children, 5 daughters, 3 of those daughters have had some supernatural experiences.....what are the chances of that!
One of them married a new husband, they moved into his house. Every morning after he would get out of bed, she would feel something come and it seemed to try and smother her. They ended up selling that house and buying another one. After that they had no more problem. Some of the family speculated that it was his deceased wife upset that there was another woman in her house....but who knows.
Another one has a son who is in the business of moving people among other things. Sometimes if they have furniture that will not fit in their new places or something they will give it to him or he will buy it. He gave his mother a sofa he acquired from someone. One night while some of her grandkids were staying over, she decided to give them the bedrooms and she slept on that new sofa. All night long, something kept pushing her off of the sofa into the floor. The next day she performed her own little exorcism.....you know where you say....in the name of our lord Jesus Christ I command you to leave this place........she never had any more trouble.
The third one is really something! They built a house on what was a old cemetery, her husband had to move the tombstones before construction. They heard noises and the doors would never stay locked. They would lock up at night and by the next morning they would all be unlocked again. Then one day she was sweeping the kitchen floor in front of a sliding glass door, suddenly the door flew open and something grabbed the broom right out of her hand! They moved from that house and all was fine for years until my grandmother became ill (she lived with this daughter) the mother and daughter started seeing people, waking up to see someone standing beside the bed, that sort of thing. When my grandmother died then people in the house began to see and hear her. The daughter took my grandmother's mattress outside and set it on fire and never saw her anymore after that.
I can't say I have ever seen anything but on several occasions I have felt a presence where there was no one.
Is this all ghosts or is my whole family crazy? EEK!

Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
I do believe In ghosts. I believe that just as radio frequency waves can be trapped In the atmosphere, so can spiritual beings.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. R.L. Binyon
Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
I dont believe in ghosts or spirits. No evidence, no logic. Just things that go bump in the night. My house is old. It makes lots of strange noises, when warming up or cooling down. The plumbing bangs and rattles. We have cold spots and hot spots. Plenty of people have lived and died here. They don't come back. No chain rattlers here.

You don't mention the third option, those souls who must undergo purgatory before being admitted to heaven

Ghosts, like UFOs are never believed by people unless that person has actually experienced it.
As for ghosts.....Here's my personal experience. Make of it what you will.
In the late sixties, my very progressive parents took to taking in runaway flower children in Boulder, Colorado. These "hippies" were usually younger girls, who were destitute and homeless. My father was a scientist for the National Bureau of Standards, so we had space and money to burn.
The only rules that applied to the guest were:
1. You had to be in school or have a job. My family helped with both of those things.
2. No drugs in the house.
In exchange for this small behavior, the runaway was made an honorary member of our family. They ate at our table, stayed rent-free, and played with us kids.
One day a girl came along who was very different from some of the rowdier drifters that had stayed with us. Her name was Rae Jean Kelly.
She had runaway from an abusive father, and I have to tell you, she was everything that was right about the flower power movement. She was a joy to be with, she wrote songs and excellent poetry. She played Sitar music and burned incense and was highly intelligent, fun, free-spirited, and out-going.
Although she had been through some hard times, and was sleeping in the street when we found her, she bounced back with an unparalleled enthusiasm.
With my family's help, she went back to school, cleaned up and began what we were all sure was going to be a wonderful life.
She often stated that she had never really had a "real childhood or family" and that the experience had changed her and given her hope.
Then............one fateful night......She went for a ride with some of her friends on a high cliff road. The driver had been taking LSD. No one is quite sure what happened, but everyone in the car was killed. Rae Jean went into a coma and never woke up.
We were all horribly distraught, of course. I was only 9 at the time but Rae Jean had been my baby-sitter for over a year so I missed her terribly.
Her room had been downstairs next to mine, everyone else lived upstairs. About two nights after she had died. I began to have dreams. I felt as if someone was in my room.
During the course of the next few weeks, things got worse. I began to wake up in the middle of the night and hear music coming from her room. I could smell incense burning. Her perfume hung in the air throughout the house. I finally couldn't take it any more, so I asked my mom one day if I could move upstairs. When she asked why, I told her what was going on.
She got the most horrified expression I have ever seen on an adult then or now. Apparently, she had also been having "experiences". She found Rae Jean's bed slept in every morning, despite the fact the the door had been locked. She found the furniture moved, and records on the turntable. Moving them back didn't seem to help, they kept moving to the same places.
Needless to say, we soon moved to a different house.
That would seem to be the end of this story, but a couple of years ago, I passed through Boulder again and decided to see my old homestead.
A nice German lady greeted me at the (still the same red-painted) door and agreed to give me a tour of the house. She seems a little sad and when I asked why, I learned that her husband and son had been killed in a tragic plane crash the month before.
As I entered the house, I got that strange "hair standing up" feeling again, but of course, being a rational adult, I put it off as my own childish paranoia. I was amazed to see that many of the decorations that my parents had made were still in place. She seemed to cheer up as we went along and began to chatter about each room like a chipmunk as we toured along.
When we got to the room that used to be Rae Jean's, I noticed that the door was still padlocked shut.
When I innocently asked (despite an elbow to the ribs from my wife who knew the story) what that room was used for now, the poor lady was struck dead still. She turned pure white and didn't say anything for an extended, awkward moment.
She finally whispered in a strained voice that, "No one goes in there anymore."
Seeing that I was not going to comment, she went on to explain that the room had a history dating back to the original owners (us). This is interesting because we never told anyone about Rae Jean. It was a personal family secret.
Apparently, guests who had stayed in the room had had terrible experiences. Attacks in the middle of the night, sheets being pulled off, books flying, that kind of thing. Worse yet, the three families that had owned the house since us had all had terrible tragic deaths in their family. In short, the room, the house, and apparently all the subsequent owners..were "cursed."
You see my point don't you? Rae Jean is still there. Why? I don't know. Maybe it was the only place she felt comfortable in her whole life. Maybe she's waiting for us to return. Maybe she's just lost.
But there's no doubt in my mind anymore.
Ghosts exist.

Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
An old lady died In my house before we took It and It's strange that In all the time I've been here, we feel an almost over-whelming sense of warmth, happiness and safety In our home.
Yet, I can walk Into other houses and I just don't feel right.

Bryn you make a point, I hadn't thought of purgatory.
Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
After my granny died one of my cousin's boyfriend stayed there one night, he knew nothing about what had been going on and was not part of the family. They put him in my granny's old room. He came running out of there in the middle of the night, saying a little old woman had come into the room....through the wall!!! and tried to get in the bed with him. He spent the rest of the night on the sofa.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I've never experienced a UFO but I'm open to the possibility. I understand the logic behind the possibility of extra terrestrials. Ghosts however have much less of a hold on my imagination. It makes much less sense to me. You would expect places like hospitals to be chock-a-block with ghosts but almost never are. I would be happy for any past member of the family to visit me at any time but see no evidence of it.
I would add that I have no intention of belittling anybodies experience. Many people have them. I am more likely to put any paranormal activity or apparent visitation down to natural occurrences.

Well.. I have told my story before.
Pans and the spice rack flying out of the bottom cupboards.
The tv having a mind of it's own.
Footsteps in the bedrooms upstairs.
People and pets seeing/following "things" in the hallway.
Names being called out. (my mum would hear my dad calling but he wasn't).
Smell of a blown out candle at night.
HELP on the wall.
When we had the house on the market "it" got worse. Mum & dad wouldn't even talk about selling the house or say when an estate agent was coming round because "it" then started to get upto mischief.
Estateagents who claimed niagara falls was pouring through the light fittings in the kitchen and claimed he put a bucket under it. When we got back, it was dry. The lamp even had dust and a dried dead fly in it. The bucket was there, bonedry.
Some people wouldn't come in the house after their first visit..
It seemed as though "it" was trying to keep us there. When we sold the house, as we left my mum turned round and said: Sorry but we are leaving, goodbye.
The people who bought our house never dared to sleep in the bedrooms in the house, but chose to sleep in the cold garage.
We never sold it because we didn't like the house, matter of fact i'd live there now. It was the location of the house (village).
So yes I believe there 'could' be something more after life, and the living can sometimes pick up on these things..

I am with Snowfire on this one.
I believe you see or experience what you are open to.
I long ago experienced an extremely short seance. I was talked into it by my school mate, just him myself and his mother around their kitchen table.
The letters around the table, each with a finger on a turned up glass thing.
They both told me they did it often, I had decided before hand that it was probably done by the participants willingly or not.
As soon as we started.....................I was convinced nobody was pushing or manipulating the glass, but the glass moved. I made my excuses and left.
I have never tried again, and have strongly warned others not to get involved with such carry ons.
I believe there are more questions than answers, some things are simply unexplainable.
My present home is over 100 years old, many of my previous homes have history, never experienced any ghostly happenings, more to do with my personal beliefs and susceptability, people have different gifts or abilities and imaginations.

I have had many many strange experiences. One (or possibly two) did involve a "ghost." I don't know what to make of it. I don't understand it, believers tell me not to try, to just believe, but I have always found that difficult. I don't believe any of the nonsense I see on reality TV.

Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
One Xmas Eve, about 40 years ago, my jolly friends & I decided to contact Jesus on a ouija board to wish him a Happy Birthday. We were just fooling around. Then, it was my turn with Robi. I know I wasn't pushing anything, but the planchette moved. I couldn't swear for Robi. The "spirit" identified herself, by spelling, not 'yes'/'no as my father's grandmother, for whom I had been named (the first initial) Her name was spelled out, she totally identified herself. She & my Dad had a special relationship. She came to warn me that my dad, in September of the coming year, would be gravely ill & might die. She spelled out 9 months, not September. I was hysterical & Robi wouldn't go any further. He told me he was pushing the planchette. The next day, I heard Robi whispering to his wife that he Did Not move anything & was as puzzled as anyone as to what happened.
Robi was Swiss & that summer I moved to Zurich. My parents were planning a visit to me that September. I received an urgent call, at work, from family informing me the visit was cancelled as my father was gravely ill with bleeding ulcers & it was touch & go. I made a flight reservation back for the next day but that too was cancelled when family called urging me to stay as my father suddenly turned a corner & was progressing rapidly (I later heard my mother saved his life by bossing everyone around & telling them where dad should be taken & what should be done.)
That's one of many many stories, one of the first. Bruv's story reminded me of it. There were many witnesses.

I believe there are things beyond our comprehension, that unless we want to understand we shouldn't play with them.
Electricity is powerful, I dont understand it, I don't mess with it.
I was brought up to believe there were 'powers' of good and evil, equal and opposing, god and satan abroad in the world, struggling toward armageddon when either the forces of good or bad would conquer all.Until the age of about 11 my parents were Jehovahs Witnesses.
Since then my opinions have changed, but I still believe in the power of the mind, for instance my wife believes in many of her African beliefs despite being a born again Christian, she believes in muti, an evil substance to cause good or bad to whoever it is directed at, she believes somebody can cause death by the power of their evil curse.
I believe the power is in her mind, my mind chooses not to subscribe to third party influences.I believe the upturned glass did move, the agent that moved it was with the groups agreement, I withdrew my agreement, I refuse to be subservient to an outside power by allowing it to get inside my mind.
Heavy man !!!!
I don't understand why you left.
I believe there are things beyond our comprehension, that unless we want to understand we shouldn't play with them.
Electricity is powerful, I dont understand it, I don't mess with it.

Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
Chloe was there any particular place or thing where the activity seemed worse? I know that after my granny died they were hearing footsteps in the house and then the whole thing happened about the guy getting scared by the little old lady coming into the room. After all that my aunt took the mattress from the bed in my granny's room and carried it out into the yard and burned it. They never had any more problems.

I have always been taught that you don't go near séances, Ouija boards or any of that kind of stuff. you might let in something you don't want.
Ghosts...Believe in Them, or Not?
As for the hospitals being full of ghosts, I think that's probably the last place they would want to be. I think they would go somewhere more familiar. I know shortly after my daddy died, I was a teenager, I was very sick and in the bed. My granny was staying with us and she was in my room and I was in my mom's room. My granny woke up the next morning and proceeded to tell us that she had seen my daddy the night before. She said he came into the room and sat down at the foot of the bed. It was the only time anyone has seen him. My mom always said that he was coming to check on me because I was so sick but I wasn't in my room. Anyway it's always made me think they can go wherever they want.

there are no ghosts...i think... propably...but on the other hand ..you can never know for sure..

Handmade things are made with soul

Well I've always been of two minds on that too, I had one grandma who was so adamant that when you die you go straight to wherever you are going and you can't come back.
Then the other grandma always telling stories about all the stuff she's seen, but I lean more toward the side that there are ghosts. I think maybe if a soul has something unfinished they can hang around.
