I am watching the results of Eurovision as I write this, for an explaination for those in the US.

We have amendments to our constitution that compel every Brit to watch the Eurovision Song Contest, an annual televised song contest, involving 37 countries.

Many like myself manage to avoid the live at least three and a half hour program, and cleverly watch the hilarious vote.

The vote is a telephone vote throughout Europe of 170 million viewers who cannot vote for their own entry, so they alternately vote for their country cousins. So many Scandinavian/Baltic/Greco/Former USSR countries favour their neighbours or protest according to things such as the price of Russian gas, or current border dispute.

At the moment the leader is a bearded female from Austria, I kid you not.

And to be totally honest, I have no idea why I am watching it, other than I am a European Brit.

Not In my house mate.

Loathe It.

Although there are pics of the bearded woman on Facebook that I've seen.

Britain's Got No Talent

X Factor

Fame Academy

Big Brother

TOWIE

Made In Chelsea

etc

Anything like that.

Correction... I am not English, I am British. Please observe the difference.

That explains it then.

Me?

I'm English, British, European, and a citizen of the world in that order.

I shall put you down as a British citizen, just like the missus.

Graham Norton makes the show for me. His comments are hilarious.

Yes, I can happily miss an hour or two of it but the results and the host country's extravaganza are a must.

The Netherlands should have won, IMO.

Good morning theia.

He says, Graham Norton, if I red the news correctly, that when he's doing Eurovision he still hears Terry Wogan speaking the lines, such is the influence of the master wordsmith. Mr Norton went up a notch when I saw that.

eta, for our American coposters:Ukraine kicked off the show with a man in a giant hamster wheel, while Greece included a trampolinist and Poland offered a number of busty performers who suggestively churned butter and washed laundry on stage.

Morning, Tyr.

Yes, Terry was the master but Graham is certainly keeping up the tradition.

For me, the ridiculousness of it all makes it watchable.

I only caught the end and the scores but I agree, Graham was doing a fine job of the banter.

Reminds me, I need to have a Eurovision Party one year.

I am glad somebody brought up Britains Got Talent.......they did didn't they ?

It is something that I have managed to resist for years, but due to living amongst lesser mortals and TV choice being a part of keeping the peace in many homes, after a few viewings I am now the official BGT's naysayer. I make a running commentary during the programme explaining the methods they use to maniplulate us, how they have to pre audition those who reach the screen, and that the people who might best be described as 'Care in the Community' are always put on at the beggining to make the later ones appear good, because in comparison they are. Last night we had two middle aged lady composers, one sang a christmas song, the other a song in praise of the Queen. If you saw them in the High st you would cross over to avoid them, to expose their frailties on prime time TV is not too many steps from throwing Christians to the lions. Another (for want of a better word) contestant who shared the same name as the god like Mr Cowell was told by his namesake that he would like to announce that Simon Cowell was the winner of BGT.

At that, I nearly had a fit. I don't know how many years the Cowell Empire has been around, with it's variations on a theme around the world but so far I can only recall one 'Winner' Mr Simon Cowell, so now they not only extracting the urine from those taking part, they are openly doing it to us.................so bold, so clever......... genius in fact.

They show it here but in the context of cheesy TV. It's very Kitsch.
