I am skeptical, how did the rain water pass through the lawn surface ?

It looks like it's a tarpaulin, with a lawn on it and water below that........or something.
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

It's not that uncommon with turf that been over-rolled. It compresses the topsoil, stopping the thick matted roots of the grass from getting a foothold, thus forming the carpet effect that you see. Once the water eventually filters through the grass matting, there is nothing for the grass roots to cling on to, so it tends to 'float' on whatever there is beneath.
