Saw the film and liked the book much better. The film drug out the 47 days at sea part and the prisoner camp part forever. He was amazing.

The book was excellent. I am sure that all of that felt like forever to him, though. They really needed to make the audience get the idea, I think.
A friend of my dad was among the guys caught up in the Philippines. Even in 1972, he said there were times he felt like he was still in prison, and all that had happened to him since was just a dream he was afraid to wake from.
Not sure how you can capture that kind of thing in a film.
