Well, it appears that my concerns regarding imminent redundancy are no more. I had an interview on the way home from work on Friday, and I got a call a few hours ago to tell me I'd got the job. They wanted me to start this Thursday, but I thought that wouldn't be fair on the office to leave them in the lurch like that, so I made it next Thursday instead. At first I'll just be shadowing, but once I get started proper it'll mean night work (the type of work I like) working on an Out Of Hours Independent Living Call Centre. It doesn't pay that well, but I feel it's something that would be rewarding.

So, for now, I have a job to go to, which is just as well, seeing as my current role comes to an end on Dec 31st.

Night work ?

I have done that and hated it, but if you like it, good for you.

Hope it all goes well.

When I'm not working my body clock defaults to nocturnal mode. The problem is that normally admin night work is very rare, and probably quite difficult to staff. I live alone with no family ties - perfect hours for me.

It's now a case of negotiating the start date. They initially wanted me to start this Thursday (tomorrow), but I said that wouldn't be fair on the office, so we agreed on the following week. However, my manager wants me to put it off another week so he can arrange coverage. The problem is that my new job needs me sooner & can't commit to a later date until arranged with her manager, who's on leave until Monday. This thing is, until I receive a written confirmation I can't formally hand in my notice.

What it is to be wanted.

On top of that I got a call on Monday from Lloyds Bank offering me a Telephone Interview (which I've already had - they didn't seem to have that on their record), then yesterday I got a call from the Blue Lamp Trust (Hampshire Fire & Rescue) offering me an interview with them, and have just got home & found an eMail asking me for an interview with Kitchen Living.

This time last year I was struggling to get one interview every 3 months or so.

Basically it's a new experience for me. Most jobs I've been made redundant from have been no great loss, followed by quite a while of job hunting afterwards. The one I really enjoyed was one where they kept asking me back, but was outside of my commuting area. Now I've got a job I love doing, I'd love to stay, but the option isn't there (unless I want to relocate to Newcastle), so now it's a matter of trying to find the type of job I fit best into, and I feel this is it. My appraisals have shown I excel at Telephone Customer Service, especially when working with the vulnerable. The very nature of this job means I'll be dealing with vulnerable people over the phone all the time. The only difference being that it won't have customers getting stroppy because they've been made to make the phone call or risk losing their benefits.
