Advice please, does a smart phone need antivirus ?

I had Kaspersky until recently then it stopped working so I deleted it, shortly after which there was a virus scare in East Europe and Kaspersky were mentioned in the news about it.

Kaspersky are as worthy of trust as any software provider and probably more so than most. It's like Freedom Fries.

A Smartphone is as untrustable a platform as it is possible to imagine, I would never key a secret into one or speak a secret in the same room, they're like Russian hotel rooms. Perhaps I need re-educating. If a security product exists for it then it's no doubt beneficial.

I got all that, except for the................like french fires bit.

I have had Kapersky on it for some time, but for an unknown reason it stopped functioning. Periodically the apps update automatically and then Kapersky asks to scan them, but for a day it refused to react.

When I saw yet another virus problem and the name Kapersky mentioned in the same article I thought it prudent to remove it.

Freedom Fries was a deliberate bit of whipped-up US xenophobia, so is the aspersion that Kaspersky Labs is an outpost of the Kremlin spying on God's Own Defenders of Civilization.

I've never had AV on my phone. But then I don't use it for any critical communications, or for accessing important websites and such.

I also never open email attachments, and the like on my phone.

If I were to put such software on the phone, though, I would probably go with WebRoot, which is my primary AV for PC.

I actually do banking on mine. So will need to get something to replace it then.

I have never thought badly of Kaspersky, but think I shall give WebRoot a try this time around.
