High school pharmacy?

Post by valerie »

A high school near where I live has started prescribing and dispensing

birth control pills and other contraceptives at an on-campus health clinic.

This apparently is a response to the high teen birth rates in the area,

with Latinas having a rate of 156 births per 1,000 teens. The rate for

non-Latina white teens in the area is lower at 55 births per 1,000 teens,

but still nearly four times greater than the rest of the county.

The medical director of the clinic, Dr. Enrique Gonzales, says the teens

will be given a "good lecture on things like how birth control pills

do not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases."

The school board voted last May to allow the clinic to provide and prescribe

contraceptives.

My oh my. I don't know what to think about this. The dispensing of any drug without a full history and exam spells danger to me. If it is mostly Latinos - I am going to assume Catholic - I smell big trouble.

What a controversial subject, your doomed if you do, & doomed if you don't!

The school "Board" voted on it, but maybe the "Parents" shoud have been the ones to vote on it. It's like giving a "License" to be sexually active, it's a tough call.

Guess there are no easy answers, or solutions! :wah:

I didn't mean to say it was wrong. I think they are asking for problems. It says a lot about family communication and mores that this is even thought about - much less approved.

OOOO no NV I was not pointing a finger at anyone. Yeah family communication is lacking indeed in that kind of circumstance. I just think at all cost, unwanted teen age pregnancies should be prevented. (speaking as a mother of 2 teen daughters) I have a vested interest in this topic,

Yes Betty it is a problem here indeed.

I agree with you completely. Too bad it isn't handled at the family level.

Yes it is somewhat of a problem in the USA, for some minority groups. That's not saying that White teens don't get pregnant also, it just seems not as high a rate as the minorities, for what ever reason.

If it is organised well and under doctors guidance it should be a good thing. Teenage girls would rather go to a stranger than tell their parents or family GP that they are having sex..... If left to the parents some don't like to think their children are having sex and ignore the issue and are then find it's too late.. they are pregnant.......I put my two girls on the pill at the age of sixteen whether they had a steady boyfriend or not....Now that they are older they say that it was a good thing to do.....a lot of their friends had baby's in their teens and some still at school.

My girl went on birth control at 13 to regulate her cycle. She went off at 17 because it was too hard on her body. Now at 21 she wants children and the docs are blaming the birth control for her infertility. The docs say it could be 1 or 2 years before she has a normal cycle.

Sorry to hear that....but did the doctor not keep a check on how she progressing while taking the pill. It sounds as though they have been the wrong type of pill for such a young girl.

One of my girls had three different types until they found one that suited her.
