Post by Nomad »

The weather is giving hint its tired of summer. The mornings are a little cooler, the sun is setting a little earlier. Im almost ready for the change. I feel differently in the summer than I do in autumn, not better just different, also I feel differently in winter from spring.

Like the seasons I change and getting there is a time for reflection. To look back and see where Ive been and forward to wonder where Im going.

I get nostalgic during the fall months, I enjoy being outside, walking, the sound of dried leaves crunching under my feet, the vibrant colors.

I eat differently......BIG FOOD :) stew and roasts, heavy comfort food.

I enjoy all the seasons but I think I like fall the most.

It reminds me of my childhood......everyone should slow down and reflect as the world around us changes I think.

It's the same here in the UK....days are shorter, it's a lot cooler and the gaudiness of the summer flowers are giving way to mellow tones.....I like it too.

I love fall! It makes me feel refreshed and more motivated. For me, the season is far too short.

ah yes , the change of seasons here in the swamp...why one day it's 100 degrees, and next thing you know it's only 98 degrees. time to get out the fall clothing. the sky is a comforting black as the hurricane bands approach. the redolent aroma of dead fish on the balmy 78 mph breeze. the comforting sight of geraldo rivera clinging to a street sign. the crisp broken glass under your feet as you walk through the latest scene of elderly road rage. *sigh*. sorry...i tend to wax nostalgic. :-1

I like the Autumn because it means I can get the winter boots out (I :-4 Boots!!:wah: )

The season I like best though is the Winter, the Sea is rough and the wind is howling, I like nothing better than to go for a walk along the promenade and battle against the elements. Thats where I reflect upon all things and find peace.

Last year we had some really bad storms, early in the autumn, I walked along the promenade to get to an appointment, I could hardly stand the wind was blowing so hard, the sea was spraying over me contstantly!! I must have looked like a mad woman, I was laughing hysterically with tears streaming down my face, it was exhilerating (sp?) two hours after I returned home, huge parts of the places I'd walked were washed away, a reminder of the power of the sea, to be respected at all times.

You know whats the best ?

A dark winter night, its snowing (big heavy flakes) everything is soft & quiet, the branches on the trees take on a life of their own.

And you pass by a home, the warm yellow lights illuminating the fresh snow outside, children playing indoors or a family eating dinner.....Im a big sap I know but when all those things come together..............life is pretty good ! :)

Yep - the daytime temp is down 10 degrees - only 87 today. :-5 I did get up yesterday and walk outside and was quite sure I "smelled" fall coming on. I knew I should not have had that 2nd cup of coffee. :wah: I like fall and spring the best. This year though spring only lasted 3 weeks (70 to 90) and I was quite sad.

I will be canning from the garden for the next month which is something I look forward to every year. I made sweet pickle relish last week and am waiting for the tomatoes to come in enough to can them. We have the State Fair and Balloon Fiesta here in the fall. I even looked at my winter quilts with the thought I'm only 3 months away from getting them out.

-Nomad very , very nice.

I love fall, it is my FAV-OR -ITE, time of the year, one my birthday and two, I love the smell of burning leaves, the crunch they make when you walk on the, the colors change, you can smell your neighbors fireplace when your out for a walk, the cool nip in the evening air, it gets dark quicker, and yes as you stated even the meals become bigger and heavier, I live in Michigan where it tends to get nippy, I love making home made pumpkin pie and I do mean home made, from baking the pumpkins to pie crust from scratch. I also have some recipes for pumpkin soup etc. if anyone is interested.

-Oops, I am looking for a recipe for a really good spiced cider if anyone has one or an old family fav. please e-mail me. rweasel05@aol.com

I like the Fall, & Spring, but now hate the Winter. Funny, this post is perfect timing, as today I just made tentative reservations for my Wife & I to go to our Southern Villa, in early December (1st or 2nd). I no longer like the SNOW, & "ICE" of Winter, so I will be in "SUN land" where it will be in the 70's & 80's.

We will celebrate Christmas with our relatives (exchanging gifts & having Xmas meal) here in our Northern Villa November 30th. All is good in the world!!:)

Nomad, this was a very nice topic. I never appreciated the seasons until I moved East 5 years ago. I lived in Los Angeles, the land of perpetual sunshine...........usually. I did not know what fall was, and how the leaves could turn such brillant colors, and you could actually put the lawn mower away for 6 months out of the year! Now fall is nice, but I do not like the winter and the snow. I guess I have never acclimated enough, and don't like wearing so many clothes in the winter.

But fall is beautiful, and you can see it in the air when the Canadian geese fly overhead and the breeze has just a little hint of what is to come.

i love how the americans call it 'fall'

i think it sounds so much nicer than autumn..... mind you i like the word autumnal...

but theres something cosy sounding about it being 'fall'....

i quite like this time, you can feel its a bit colder and you can sense the winter coming.... makes me wanna go home, put the fire on and snuggle up...

snug as a bug in a rug!

and as nomad said its lovely going for walks.....

Nothing is more beautiful than the southern English countryside - pick a season. If the English knew what they had, everybody would own a car.

Upstate New York (Rome) was simply stunning those 4.324 days they call Fall, but suffering through 14 feet of snow that same winter was not an even trade.

Northern CA is pretty, but loses some of it's luster simply because it doesn't change much.

The Great Salt Lake in Utah's panoramic views of the mountain range from the valley is far superior to actually going into the mountains and seeing them up close.

I do adore the autumn, it's my favourite season by far. I think it's wrapping up warm in big jumpers and wooly hats, the smell of woodsmoke from bonfires, and playing in piles of fallen leaves in the woods, then going home to a hot chocolate and an open fire. Heaven :-4

Summer in Illinois has been pure HELL this year. First the whole state suffered a drought and 90 plus degrees just about everyday. Today it is raining (to late for our crops) and the temperature at 10:00a.m. is 70 degrees. Hooray for fall! Leaves turning, harvesting, pumpkins, cooler weather, Halloween, weiner roasts, Can dress in nice clothles, forget the shorts and tank tops. Food-Apple cake, pumpkin bars and pies, Mulled cider (Jasmund your recipe is on its way) popcorn.

My favorite day is going for a walk in a state park near us amongst the falling colored leaves, coming home fixing hot mulled cider, a big bowl of popcorn and getting a mystery movie on t.v. Sometimes I rake a pile of leaves and put them in our brick trash burner and burn them just for the smell. We live in the country so no neighbors gripping. :D
