Katrina Refugees - No Place To Go - Oh, Really?
Katrina Refugees - No Place To Go - Oh, Really?
As officials call a halt to any more refugees going to the Astrodome in Texas, authorities are frantically trying to find or setup new camps for the thousands of stranded Katrina victims.
Let's think about what we can do for them:
1. Keep them in public centers with minimal facilities.
2. Build FEMA tent camps.
3. Build clapboard temporary housing in refugee areas.
OR - use our military bases that are scheduled to be closed (during war) by our brilliant Pentagon planners. Let's take a look at the current bases on this list:

Katrina Refugees - No Place To Go - Oh, Really?
I think using former facilities from prior BRAC initiatives would be a great idea. But it will be several years before those bases on this years list are closed. If the bases are to close, the last thing they need are thousands of refugees.
Katrina Refugees - No Place To Go - Oh, Really?
There were thousands being sent to Minneapolis/St. Paul area according to my daugther that lives around there and about 3000 -3500 coming to chicago
as of 2 nights ago. BUT some of the Military bases, espeically closer to their
original homes would be an excellent idea... and most definitely set up to house thousands of people along with areas for showers, toilet etc, food prep and eating, medical assistance etc.
How come all the people in government that get the big bucks can never come up with anything that remotely resembles an intelligent idea... always comes from us drones out here in taxpayer land
THAT is the LIST OF THE BASES scheduled to be closed.. THAT long list...
THAT is some scarey stuff... are we going the route of the UK and others in their firearms/defense paranoia, downsizing military, neuturing the law enforcement
offices and leaving the rest of the population to defend themselves with paperclips and rubber bands from the mad and the bad of the world that prey on us without fear ?
According to your list there are a LOT of military facilities in Texas alone, would it not make more sense to move the people that cannot find alternative housing other than the dome shortly into these facilities that are more equipped to handle large groups of military personnel and their families for these people and the familes - its makes sense to put them to some good use for the time being rather than move military people out and let them sit vacant or at the hands of greedy developers enticing the Pentagon hiearchy with the lowball bids for the land
once cleared. That happened here after they closed the Glenview Naval Air base.. I knew a LOT Of guys that went through that base over the years. NOW its mega shopping mall haven with outragouesly priced townhomes and condo's.. some developer/group made a small fortune on the pennies it threw to
the government for the land once the base was deserted !

The difference between Congress as envisoned by the Founding Fathers and the Congress we have today is one of them inspires patriots to support it, and the other inspires patriots to buy extra ammo (Angel Shamaya)

I think that's a wonderful idea to use our bases. However, a few on here, such as in Pascagoula, MS & Baton Rouge, LA may have sustained some severe damage due to the hurricane.

Found out just today that the buildings we're using on Kelly, the base in San Antonio, is privately owned. Somebody bought them from the gov't some time ago and is charging standard rates to the Red Cross. Not everyone is charitable, just nice.
