PBS is changing the name of the beloved Cookie Monster to Veggie monster! Through the pressure to illustrate good eating habits to children, the lovable cookie munching, number bashing muppet is having his name changed-and his diet too! What is wrong with PBS! You don't change a good thing! And what's wrong with a cookie once in awhile!
*my favorite is peanut butter cookies*
What do you think of this lunacy?

That's just stupid in my opinion. I grew up watching the Cookie monster and his friends, and can't say that I ever was tempted to scoff cookies because of watching him. But then it justs goes to show what is happening to the world, when something like this happens.

Absolutely necessary IMO! Biological parents have relinquished their parental responsibilities wholesale to programs such as Sesame Street, and the programs are gladly claiming the job. If children do not learn it on tv, they don't learn it at all. I'll just be glad when Grover figures out how to teach proper manners and discipline, since many parents don't do that, either.

RIDICULOUS!! how crazy. Parents need to start taking some responsibility for the education of their children so that they are able to distinguish fiction from reality, good from bad, and cookies from veggies!

that sucks.

YOu have to be kidding me.. you are not serious..
If this is true, what is next... Oscar the Grouch being sent to anger management training, Fat Blue going on a diet to combat his obesitiy, an investigation into gay mannerisms in Bert and Ernie's relationship.. and the list could go on..
this is totally freaking ridiculous..
thankfully all of my daughter and nices and nephews are past this age...

I know what you mean. :wah: The stuff I ate! And I never wore protective gear.
I'm sure parents have always felt inadequate to the task. The difference today is that there are others that claim to be adequate, and they've convinced many parents to let them take over.

ROFLMAO! But seriously folks, times have changed. When I was young, my mother kicked us out of the house the second we got home from school and we had to play until the streetlights came on. (Not like we weren't OK with that either!)
The other day I told my class that they should get out and get some exercise and sun on the weekend. They just laughed. One said, "What? Go outside where the child molesters are? Are you crazy?"
As I mulled over that comment with it's many layers of trouble, I noticed just how overweight most of them were. Even the girls who were usually lanky and thin had bulging tummies....and for once it wasn't teen pregnancy.
Let's face it....it's not the 70's anymore.

Ok wait...I must have heard wrong. I thought they were ADDING a new monster and that would be veggie monster, not replacing cookie monster! For real? They are REPLACING him? Well I agree that stinks. To have simply added a monster would have been better. Then they could have taught an additional lesson to children about accepting others when they are different/new. Well anyhow, Accountable does have a point though. The statistics of kids health/weight in the U.S. is staggering....they are getting fatter and fatter. And it is society's fault. Jives is right about the fear of molesters. On my street we are small and the kids do play outsided til dark but there are a ton of stay home moms and dads with wierd schedules here, so parents are ALWAYS out there. It is not the norm. I am impressed with fast food restaurants offering healthier choices, but the parents have to choose them for their children and they don't. Most kids today don't know what fruit is. Very sad. Really I like the idea of a veggie monster, but not to replace cookie monster. Everything should be in moderation. Cookies are ok, just not the whole bag!!!

Careful what you say about Elmo, some stuffed animals are allied with the muppets. You never know what ears are nearby. :-3

Well.. the U.S. is not alone in the ballooning statistics of fat kids.. and face it they are fat. Some of it can be credited to genetic makeup but most of it is directly related to couch potato syndrome.. video game stations... computers... and permissive parents. The fast food industry (and not just Rotten Ronnies either) targets the pre-teen and teenage groups extensively.. the video game industry does the same...
I spent a week at the Jersey shore with 2 nephews.. all they did was sit and play gameboys.. and were wicked bummed because there was no television...
now hear is an idea for the folks at Sesame street..
how about a character that would encourage kids to get off the sofa.. put down the video controller.. or get away from the PC or television.. demonstrate the benefits of a healthy diet instead of a fast food pig out.. I mean hell if the parents aren't gonna do it..

I went back and rechecked the facts, the Cookie Monster is now known as the Veggie Monster-no more cookies..................
No, you sweet, furry blue thing, no cookies for you. Even though you have made thousands of kids smile for twenty years, and grownups laugh to be a kid. PC has taken over, and you have to eat your veggies instead. Well, I still hate spinach and won't eat it anyway at my age!

I didn't believe this when I first read it I actually, and for the first time ever, checked this out on the internet cause it was too incredible to be true, I thought. How can you change a person's (puppet's) basic nature and their name!
Name's change for women when they marry and they can choose NOT to have it change. Women can "take back their names" when they divorce.
Name's change when one is adopted.
Name's change when you want/need to hide so people cannot find you Then you cover up your identity with a new name (usually in a new location), but you are still the same you. That's how these people are found out. Habits, interests and tastes betray them.
This surely wasn't a very well thought out move by the producers.
But then, who knows what further evil lurks behind this move........ Maybe to be even more in tune with the times, they will have Cookie --- opps! I meant Veggie Monster becoming a closet cookie eater and then purging. Oh yeah, we need to let the little ones know "this is not what they should do".......

And I agree with Chonsi, the number of vegetables that I like can be counted on one hand.
But as I age, and as I read the research, the more I'm aware of just how important vegetables are to my body. Were talking about resistance to cancer, increased immune system efficiency, and especially...longevity!
I love being alive, and if I have to eat a few more vegetables to do it, then I'll eat them. Why is that a bad thing to teach our children?:o

Oh.. I love veggies.. the healthy rewards from eating fresh fruits and veggies is irrefutable.. but...
to take an icon like the Cookie Monster and turn him into a spinach eating, carrot loving vegeterian symbol, all in the search to create a healthy symbol for today's children borders on the ridiculous...
Parents are supposed to be watching what thier children eat.. not a television show.
As I stated above... create a new character if you want to play parent.. but leave Cookie Monster be..

Jives, it is not bad to teach that to our children. It is bad to take an established, well-loved character and change them for the sake of PC-ness. Make another muppet, there are plenty of them around.

My first being Oscar the Grouch!
Which brings up my point here... When are they gonna make him less grouchy? or bring in another trash can with a more PC "happy" monster?
And speaking of Gouchy.. I'm off to some medical tests... where some poor technician's gonna have a bad day when they try to stick a needle in a 200 pound former drill sergeant, who's already angry at the doc for scheduling this test... did I mention I can't have breakfast yet... but after that needle stick I can... might have to eat a technician for breakfast... hmmmmm wonder if that is politically correct?
:-2
Just be sure to have a side of "veggies" with that technician!!!

The Veggie Monster? NO way!!! He'll always be the cookie monster to me. Don't ever recall my kids being influenced by cookie monster to eat cookies. He was just entertainment.
I'm with Far Rider...Oscar the Grouch was my favorite too.
And by the way Far....how'd you make out at your testing? Or should it be asked...how'd the technician make out? :wah:

I agree with all the points made so far, I think encouraging kids to eat veggies is fine, but not at the expense of removing good old CM. I just considered CM to be a funny, amusing guy when I saw him, and can't say that I was ever influenced by him to start eating cookies left, right and centre.

Just wanted to share what i saw yesterday! As the kids were all coming down the street from school in afternoon, I noticed one girl's blue shirt had Cookie Monster on front and on the back, real big it said..."ME WANT COOKIES!!" This girl is about 11 years old, and a really good kid! I told her "Oh I love your shirt!" It got me thinking.......I would love to have one. Why don't we ALL start wearing them?!!!!! LOL
