The CHRISTMAS Season
The CHRISTMAS Season
The first day of the Christmas season is now past and for most people, Christmas is but this one day. However, we still have eleven more days of the Christmas season until Epiphany (January 6th).
Do you do anything special after the first day?

The CHRISTMAS Season
Today is Boxing Day
Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and countries in the Commonwealth of Nations with a mainly Christian population. In South Africa, this public holiday is now known as the Day of Goodwill. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. Contemporary Boxing Day in many countries is now a "shopping holiday" associated with after-Christmas sales.
This day is historically England's name for St. Stephen's Day. Saint Stephen was the first Christian martyr, being stoned to death in Jerusalem around A.D. 34-35 - 26 December, which is a public holiday in most countries in Europe and many countries around the world with predominantly Christian populations. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, St Stephen's Day is celebrated on the 27th of December, although in Greece the Greek Boxing Day (Synaxis Theotokou, Σύναξις Θεοτόκου) is also celebrated as a public holiday on the 26th of December and is not related to the English version.[citation needed]
In Ireland the Bank Holidays Act 1871 established the feast day of St. Stephen's Day as a non-moveable public holiday on December the 26th, although since partition the name "Boxing Day" is used by the authorities in Northern Ireland and it has become a moveable public holiday in line with the rest of the UK.
The Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971 established "Boxing Day" as a public holiday in Scotland. In the Australian state of South Australia, December the 26th is a public holiday known as Proclamation Day.
It is usually celebrated on the 26th of December, the day after Christmas Day[1][2]; however, unlike St. Stephen's Day, Boxing Day is not always on the 26th of December, its associated public holiday can be moved to the next weekday if the 26th of December is a Saturday or Sunday. The movement of Boxing Day varies between countries.

Yesterday I realised I didn't get everything I needed on Wednesday for today. So I went online and found Morrisons to be closed both days.Checked Sainsbury's and found a few of their stores open today. But I jumped up and down with glee when I found one store that opened at 9am as it meant I could shop before picking up my daughter.:-6

The CHRISTMAS Season
The days after Christmas, for me, is still a time of gifting.
Today I am trying to find the gifts I finally remembered I bought but forgot about. I allow myself the full 12 days of Christmas to deliver them.
It is also the time I send off my sister & BIL's gifts for a "Happy New Year".
AND, today I'm adding to this list. This year I forgot to distribute the gifts my friend sent for my daughters and grandsons...................
Also, as the time before Christmas was so very busy, I still have dinner and a gift exchange with a close friend.
The festive fun just goes on and on.................... :-6

The CHRISTMAS Season
We celebrate Epiphany in our household, and there will be one gift left to open on that day. I'll cook a nice dinner of my husband's favorite goodies. The tree will come down the next day.

Our tree didn't go up till the 23rd so I think I will leave it up till a little after that. Of course I'll wait till they go back to school and then take it down as I have a system of putting the decorations away, etc.
Oh no. Not a system.
Yeaaaaaaaaaaagh!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my goodness, I feel like a grinch!! After Christmas, I'm just so relieved that it's all done with. I couldn't do it for another eleven days. I've never really been a real Christmas fan.
I think it's absolutely wonderful, though, that you really make the most and best of the whole Christmas season.
I prefer New Year's more. The whole month of January is a really special time to me.

That's because Christmas is so different now to what it used to be. In the past, the members of a community would pool together and it was a far more social event than it is now.
Today, Christmas is provided on a household/family basis where the old communities have diverged and fled the roost to work and live around the world.
In the past, Christmas presents were made or provided by hand by the donors whereas now they are purchased from retailers.
This is why Christmas feels so empty to so many people nowadays. While Christmas is still a family get together, for most, it has become more of a commercial event than a self-giving event. Most people feel that enough is sacrificed just facing the family again even for just one day.

So true. It does feel rather empty to me.
I'd really like Christmas to be what it was. I mean, I asked for stuff that was useful. New wool socks, new mitts, a yoga ball.
I don't like seeing these commercials for buying new cars at Christmas, upgrading to bigger diamond rings, or getting the latest electronic gadget. It kind of makes me sad.
Love and a warm pair of socks, I believe, are the best gifts. So, Christmas was still pretty good for me. :-4

Yes, lifestyles sure have changed. We are indeed a very mobile society. When my parents were young, everthing they did revolved around the church. This is no longer true for most. What happened naturally before must now be consciously worked on to make happen. Life has alot more choices now and most of us, more often than not, roll into whatever works for us. We've lost things and we've gained other things. Hopefully we've chosen well.

Glad to hear it. Sounds cosy to me. Can just imagine the socks warming up on a stand in front of the crackling fire.
Here's the rub, almost as science fiction has prophesied: coal fires, complete with spitting cold stones, are considered the ultimate in home luxury emulating the romantic warmth of the past; complete with free lambswool rug. [My £35 3kW heater with fan heats my room in minutes in contrast to last year when the wind howled past the panes and overcome my pitiful oil-filled radiator. PROGRESS. No burns in my carpet. No need for a fire guard. Daughter proof.

"It's called "Christ"mas
not chri$tma$."
