Yes, those are the best donuts. I used to get a dozen every Saturday morning for the kids when they were little, they thought that was the yummiest treat on earth.

The machines are no good, but... the doughnuts MUST be fresh... even the Krispy Kreme's have to be fresh out of the oven to be any good... those ones that they sell in the local supermarkets are already too old. The best glazed yeast doughnuts I've ever had are ones that I made myself using an old family recipe.
The doughnut that I believe Nomad is seeking can be found in Westport, Connecticut in a lil' stripmall shop called the Coffee an' Donut Shop.

Time is one of the most important variables in great-tasting doughnuts... a machine also doesn't take into account environmental factors, either... all you need is a good old-fashioned recipe that has been tested and perfected over the years, fresh high-quality ingredients, a doughnut cutter... or whatever works to give you the same effect... (if ya' don't mind square doughnuts you can cut the dough into squares and have beignets), a pan with some oil for frying, and time to allow the doughnuts to rise properly and allow the flavor to build.
