This story truly upsets me......



This was not really a sudden storm. We knew that we were having bad weather for this whole week. Weather is always an unpredictable science. Sometimes storms show up early, or late, or not at all.



Don't take a chance with young children on the open seas.

MYFOXNY.COM - A sudden and strong thunderstorm capsized more than two dozen small sailboats in New Jersey's Shark River, sending 36 children flying into the water on Monday, the Coast Guard said.



Some of the students had ended up on the beach in Neptune City. Others were still in the water when help arrived.

I reckon they learned a lot from that, but perhaps I'm missing something. I'm not sure where "tossed themselves into river" comes from though. I've seen flotillas of small dinghies flattened by sudden variable wind before now and they do seem to have been under qualified supervision.

This can be a bit of a dangerous river at time. Some of those children are 7 yrs. old....guess I'm overprotective at times anyway and glad no one was hurt or panicked.

Ah - that makes sense of the headline then. I did that in Poole Harbour once - that's an inlet of the Atlantic too.

Children sometimes end up drowned by poor decision-making on the part of instructors but where to draw the line, once you've done all you can to qualify the instructors themselves, I'm not sure. No child would ever ride a horse if what they did had to be risk-free. Perhaps it's society's decision whether it wants 100 adults with no practice at assessing and acting on risk, or 99 who learned how during their childhood. I agree with you, fewer children would die if they were wrapped in cotton wool and forbidden to ever test themselves. On the other hand, the proportion of children dying of sports accidents is low compared to those dying of risks we cheerfully expose them to on a regular basis like being passengers in cars. I know which risk does more to build their character.

So you can honestly say if severe storms are predicted you would still let your child or grandchild go out in a boat?

I'd pay for them to be taken though I'm sure the children wouldn't be allowed to join in if they weren't at the appropriate experience level to begin with.

Whenever I took them camping in the hills in winter at that age we'd wait for a weekend with snow and fog just to make it worth the effort, they learned a lot more self-assurance with a map and compass that way.

Quite shocking they didn't check the weather and kids so young?

Life jackets or not, tossed around, they are lucky to be alive.
