The smart majority if not all the UK car owners have cars that get 40mpg or better, not like the majority of gas guzzlers here in the US, that are lucky to get 15 to 20 mpg. It's a wash in that respect.
Remember that our 40 mpg would be 32 mpg on your "gallon" so, even with the difference in consumption we're still paying more per mile than you.
And that's comparing against your home grown heavy metal - I thought more and more Americans were buying imported motors because of the better fuel consumption.
