First British charges for Female Genital Mutilation

Post by FourPart »

FGM in the UK is becoming rarer, but by no means stopped, as not only is it illegal, but as new generations of migrant descent are born & raised among our own culture, it is becoming less acceptable in their own.

There are still, however, those extremists who will insist on taking their daughters back to some tribal country to undergo the ancient, and in my opinion, absolutely barbaric acts of genital mutilation.

And, as with Tyr, I am also opposed to all forms of cultural & religious genital mutilation, including Male Circumcision. If they wish to undergo the procedure once they are at an age when they can make the decision for themselves, that is their choice and, if anything, when done in this way would be a greater demonstration of their own faith, rather than having the mutilation thrust upon them in the innocence & ignorance of infancy.

I always find it incredible that in this day & age such blood rituals can still exist.

I note that there is one form of genital mutilation which has, to the best of my knowledge, been eradicated entirely over a period of roughly a century (from a start toward abandonment around 1810 to eradication around 1870 in Austria and, from memory, around 1900 in Rome). Austrian and Italian choirs no longer commission the castration of pre-pubertal boys prior to a career as a castrati singer. Nobody can any longer hear an equivalent of what the 18th century Austrian social elite heard, an entire sound has been completely destroyed.

Perfectly good arguments could be advanced for its return but they're overridden by a moral imperative not to impose risk or surgery without informed consent or physical well-being. That same imperative should dictate the end of all forms of FGM and MGM which are still practiced across the world. The fact that I can book a boy into a British hospital for circumcision but not a girl of the same age for an equivalent intervention does not make male circumcision ethical or acceptable, it merely makes it currently legal - much like the castration of boys in Vienna used to be.

A couple of years ago Germany banned Religious Circumcision. Now it appears that they have back-tracked, with certain clauses:

There's an Irony. Those who turn a blind eye to animals slaughtered by not pre stunning and exempt for religious reasons then jump up and down at male circumcision and the primary reason for this practice, Is religious reasons first, hygiene second.

Circumcision - NHS Choices

Female Genital Mutilation Is primarily carried out to reduce a woman's sexual desire. Male Circumcision does not do that.

END FGM // control of women's sexuality, an initiation rite into womanhood, hygiene and religion. - Female Genital Mutilation

Sorry Fourpart but you are completely wrong that FGM Is becoming rarer In the UK. It certainly Is not. It Is on the rise.

While I don't dispute this, I can't help but wonder if it's more a matter of analysing the figures & the wording. The articles refer to 'reported' cases being on the increase. Obviously there is no real way of knowing for certain the number of non-reported cases, but I suspect that by the very fact that numbers are being reported, then it is becoming less acceptable & therefore lessening in real terms.

There is also the aspect of absolute figures & those of per capita. Whilst the overall population of the world is constantly increasing, the proportionate Ethnic population within the U.K. is increasing more than that of White British (Ethnicity and National Identity in England and Wales 2011 - ONS). Therefore, if the absolute figures were to remain the same, the per capita rate would be a decline in real terms. Similarly if the percentage increase was less than that of the percentage increase of the culture in question that, too, would be a decrease in real terms.

Incidentally, Male circumcision does diminish sexual sensation. It's just that those who have never known what it is to be uncut during their sexually active lives have no point of reference to know any better.

How can you dispute data provided by the NHS?

The data was obtained through Freedom of Information requests to NHS Trusts by BBC London 94.9.

London's mayor Boris Johnson said the practice was "absolutely intolerable".

Forty-one hospital trusts were contacted by the BBC with most supplying figures. Six said they did not currently record figures on FGM, while four did not respond.

The remaining 31 trusts reported that a total of 3,939 FGM patients had been treated in London hospitals.

St George's Healthcare NHS Trust treated the second largest number of patients, with a total of 795 seen between 2009 and 2013, eight of whom were born in the UK.

The trust also revealed six girls under the age of 18 had been treated.

Those are just the girls that have been treated In hospitals after Infection set In or the practice was botched.

Police target 'cutters' in campaign against UK female genital mutilation | Society | The Guardian

A senior police officer has appealed for information about the "cutters" who carry out female genital mutilation on young girls, as pressure grows over the failure to bring a single prosecution in the UK for the abuse, which is thought to affect tens of thousands of girls.

Hardly, the rare event In the UK you claim and hardly dying out.
