Not a "whine" just asking questions. I remember seeing several threads in this forum dedicated to nothing but members asking other members questions. Why are mine so wrong? Can we only post questions in certain areas of this forum? Are general questions about certain members off limits? Just asking. :)

Not at all, I just find it interesting that you have only just got here and are "sticking up" for him rather consistently, and bumping all his threads. I'm a suspicious type person, and I'm not stupid, either. Pretty transparent if you ask me. Even if you don't ask me.

I appreciate you input. Just be careful. It looks like the "guilt by association" has already started. It might get worse before it gets better. We live in the same state. That's got to be a factor in the conspiracy also.

I decided to join because of what you posted in the "Regional" section. After I looked over some of your other posts and the way you were getting attacked, it seemed to me you were getting the short end of the stick. I'm not saying who was right or who was wrong, just what I think. If that makes me guilty by association, oh well. Life goes on.

Wht does he need defending? Strikes as someone who is eminently capable of speaking up for himself. Being opinionated is not a crime so long as you are ready to defend your opinion and ready to accept that the opinion of others is just as valuable and yours might be wrong or not informed enough.

An opionated pillock is just an opinionated pillock no matter what they think of themselves. An ignorant opinionated pillock will either learn to think about what they think or move on to find intellectiual masterbation somewhere else.

So it's a generic, "unknown British word" with a primary sexual connotation. Wow. What a excellent debating resource. (NOT) :wah:

tsktsk clearly americans lack the derth of language to express themselves properly. No doubt it's due to being isolated so long from civilisation and forgetting so many words as well as how to spell properly. (not spell the word properly you understand, cos I'm sure you can spell properly properly but other words you can't spell properly like colour)

There are also such exciting terms that would have beeen equally appropriate ba'heid, nyaff, scunner, numpty. but I thought that adding scots words in as well as anglo saxon would be pushing the language barriers a bit

Hey guys...this isn't an 'English language' debating forum. We use 'weird' words both sides of the Atlantic. Sometimes I have to PM someone to 'translate' for me. There are far worse words that are REALLY insulting IMO.:) :) :)

Yea, stupid Americans. If we want to call someone an "idiot," we call them an "idiot" instead of using an "unknown British word" related to male anatomy. :wah:

Hope you don't mind the '.....' I use a lot of them...it keeps the words flowing for me. I can write 'pukka' when I have to. PUKKA is NOT a rude word by the way .:)

ArnoldLayne wrote: ChiptBeef, there is no anti-Americanism here and not in gmc's post either. As Accountable points out he is pulling your leg. There is also nothing wrong with us using slang, in fact some of our slang has been adopted here in the Garden by some American members because it is descriptive and colourful.

You must understand that the usage of the word "pillock" in the English language has long since lost any offensive conotation and is used in a playful manner.

You will find gmc to be a worthy and knowledgable adversary in future debates. I trust you dont want an easy ride, thats no fun :)

Lastly, before you ask, my ignore is switched off and my opinion of you has adjusted since your early posts. That earlier reaction by several of us may have been unfounded but only susbsequent posting has since changed my view. If I may be so bold as to respectfully suggest loosening your top shirt button occasionally as to affect some occasional banter. Your stiff collar sometimes obscures a sense of humour :D

However "Opinions vary"...... Carry on ! ;)
I apologize for any offense, past or present. You're right. GMC was just making a general statement with no names mentioned. I may have been making the ride harder than it needed to be. I'm currently wearing a sweatshirt (no buttons or collar). Hopefully, my sincere appreciation of your post comes thru. I was guilty of being too defensive ( as in this case). I'll try hard to put that to bed.

P.S. Touche' on the last sentence. Outstanding. I earned that.

pukka PUHK-uh, adjective:

1. Authentic; genuine.

2. Good of its kind; first-class.

He talks like the quintessential pukka Englishman and quotes Chesterton and Kipling by the yard and yet he has chosen to live most of his adult life abroad.

-- Lynn Barber, "Bell book . . . and then what?," The Observer, August 27, 2000

If he does not have a house, the government gives him a pukka residence, not a . . . shack on the pavement but a solid construction.

-- Salman Rushdie, The Ground Beneath Her Feet

We must have posted about the same time as I did not see this one. I was actually sticking up for you but trying to interject a bit of humour at the same time.

You're opinionated but I don't think you are stupid and I for one would be sorry if you stopped posting. I was just trying to make the point that someone who is opinionated but with nothing else will get fed up and go away. Someone who is opoinionated but likes being challenged about his opinions and challenging others will realise that some of the posters here will make him think and stick around. I did not mean anything personal about you or anyone else.

I was indeed pulling your plonker, taking the ****, taking the mickey.

to illustrate how the word numpty is used The Scottish parliament is known locally as the "numpty house". Somehow it just seems more accurate. I bet you can think of several institutions that would fit the description.

I find the language differences entertaining and sometimes can't resist the temptation to show off. Colloquial english is full of fairly earthy expressions that seem to have fallen in to disuse in american english. Added to that is I know lots of obscure scots words as well. You will also find that the British posters will take the mickey out of regional differences amongst themselves on a fairly regular basis without taking the least offence.
