"Am contemplating whether I should have placed this in the "jokes Section"Notice in to-days newspaper that the managers of Sea World, on the Gold Coast of Queensland, have deemed that in future Fairy Penguins be referred to as baby penguins. They have said they do not want to upset the Gay community, and have suggested the name substitute

Evidently no-body thought to consult the poor penguins on the name change.

It always worries me that people who come up with these queer ideas also have a vote."

I posted this to an American news group and it was censored.

The site I am referring to uses language filtering software. Through trial and error I found out the offending word.

It wasn't FAIRY!

It wasn't GAY!

NO! NO! NO!

It was QUEER!!!!!!!

What next!

And I'm a bit odd myself. At least Sweet and Lovely says so!

As an out of the closet and practising Homo Sapien, I'm deeply offended.

Some wit responded to a six month old posting of mine on another forum with the unimaginative yet inoffensive phrase "Get a life".

I quoted this phrase in my reply (which was, I have a life, and I have no time to revisit old and forgotten debates), yet the forum's filtering software transformed the phrase into "Get a ####".

The sysop explained that he was attempting to keep things civil, so epithets and slurs were filtered. (I simply spelled "life" with an upper case "I", which is identical to a lower case "L" in their font style, which I now see is not the way it is here.)

Anyway, it was probably the American news group's moderator's way of keeping things orderly and polite.

Not that I'm saying it's the right thing to do...

I've had a word with the fairies at the bottom of my garden and they would like it to be known that they object to the word fairy being given this connotation. While in their society such predilictions are not unknown it is quite rare but generally speaking no one is offended since what one does in private causes ni great problem. The Fairy Queen herself is oft quoted as saying that trying to understand humans is a waste of time but admits to being slightly worreid that Elton John may be after her title.

I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread. This world is becoming so "PC" (I get nauseous when I write those 2 letters) that we will soon not be able to say anything in public, on the web or anywhere else for that matter without "fear" of offending someone. I am so damn sick and tired of this sh!t. Anyone, anywhere can find reason to be "offended" by ANYTHING. People need to grow some thicker skin and a few more brain cells.

I, for one, will continue to use the exact same words, phrases, and language I have always used. If you're offended, go somewhere else, ignore me. I don't give a f*ck.

How is it, that in this supposedly "enlightened" society where freedom of speech is supposed to be so prized, have we allowed this to happen?

Folks, you better start to learn sign language, because soon, there's going to be all kinds of words that will be illegal to utter in public. What a goddam joke.

BR - I've always tried to do something non-PC as soon as I get up each morning, as a sign of what I'll be doing all day.

I heard the English series of Noddy books got censored because one began:

One day Noddy woke up feeling a little queer.. hee hee (I hope a good time was had by all.)

Of course just about everything would be censored if the PC brigade had their way.

They could perhaps start with the Bible. People get up to some pretty raunchy stuff there.

It was a relief to see Black Sally Lane still exists on the coast road here.. just about every other name with 'black' in it has been sanitised.

Bloody heck - Girlfriend.. if I ever tell you I'm feeling merry and gay - ya don't hafta shoot through fast, OK!!

You say whatever the hell pleases you, Pam. I do, and I won't change a thing to satisfy the "PC" mongers. Sheer spite.

I don't know how sane I am, Miss Theia, but I do know that I will not now or ever change one word, phrase or a single bit of language that I use. Period. End of sentence. Next paragraph.

BR, I worked in mental health for nine years and we were all tiptoeing (?) around, scared that we would use the "wrong" word or expression. I'm out of it now, thankfully.

Yer just bolshie and bloody-minded, BR... Thank God!!! You could almost be an Aussie!!! Yeah... a fairdinkum, true blue one, Sport! Whaddya reckon, Theia??? Glad you're out of the closet now too hee hee.. By the way - I went hiking down by the Cotter river here the weekend before last. Hadn't been there since the last lot of bushfires reduced the area to ashes. It;s regrowing now. But what I wanted to say was that this had been the local biker meeting place, and they'd come back - everyone from kids on their trainerwheels to fully fledged big bad boys and girls.. grin. Good to see.

I take that as a high compliment Pam. I will get to Australia before I die. It's something I've wanted since I was a little girl, collecting koala bears.

Can I count on you as a tour guide of the bush?

Bullet said Aussies aren't real fond of American tourists. Is that true? Not you personally, but just in general....

It's always possible to find a few people who don't like Americans period. Like my ex work colleague who said that once to me. I asked her if she'd ever been to America. No. I asked her if she knew any actual, real Americans, personally. No. What can one say?!! There's ignorant folk everywhere, sadly. Most Aussies are up front welcoming and friendly to all visitors, and I've always found Americans are the same. I'd love to show you the bush!!!
