True or False?

Post by Sheryl »

So is the following statement true or false?

The only person who can make you happy is yourself.

I hear this all the time, but is it true?

I vote true...if you're not "open" to happiness, it's not going to happen.

Great question, Sher :)

I think, ultimately, the answer is yes.

It goes back to my old theory: Expectations.

If your expectations of friends, romantic relationships, jobs, and life in general are set at a realistic level, then you can hope to reach them.

And if you *do* reach them, you can *choose* to be happy.

Hey, what do I know? But it works for me :-6

Happiness is just a by product for me (of getting out of my own way)..:-6

Hamster...you have to be "open" to that. What about flowers from George Bush? Would THAT make you happy?

(Didn't think so.)

it probably meant i made them happy....:sneaky:

you have to be happy within, to be able to really accept and give happiness without..........

Well, kind of . . .

Let's say someone gave you some hand-picked daisies. Half of them were dying.

You could think, " These flowers suck! Why couldn't you you get me a better arrangment?"

Or, you could think, " How nice of you to think of me!"

It's being happy with the thought and not the object. It's *choosing* to see it as a lovely thought, not as crummy flowers.

I'm not even sure that makes sense  :)

Wow thanks all for your quick responses.

I think it's true also, but it's a journy to figure out what it takes to make you happy with yourself. I guess it could go along with Pinky's thread on do you have to like yourself.

Cher, I like your response. But is it just setting realistic expectations in life that makes one happy. Or do think there are other factors within oneself?

Yes> True> I mean a happy person. Other people can bring me happiness for a period of time. But to be a happy person comes from me inside.:)

I think it's true, after I hit a real low a few years ago nothing could make me happy, despite everyone trying to make me feel better nothing worked until I felt at a better place in my heart :)

Oh I'm sure it's more complicated than that!

I look at it as a journey, not a destination. Plus it is ever-changing. As you get older (and hopefully wiser:) ), what makes you happy is probably *not* what made you happy five years ago.

Here is an example for me: When my Mom passed away three years ago, it was sudden and unexpected. I was angry and felt 'cheated'.

But I just *knew*, knowing myself, that I would get to the point where I would feel *so lucky* to have HAD such a wonderful Mom. I'm so grateful for the loving memories I have of my time with her.

Even though I no longer 'have' her (which is not a happy thought), I *choose* to feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to share what time I did have with her.

I feel like one of the lucky ones in life :-6

So those who say yes are saying that "because somone is not happy with themselves others cannot make them happy"?

I disagree.

You could make me happy but when you were gone, so would the happy be gone. To be a happy person, I must be happy myself inside. Then you make me happier and when you are gone I am still happy but not that you are gone. ummmm if that is not clear, blame the mud not me.:D

I shouldn't be the one to have to remind you of how happy you should be, but if so is the case by misperceived reality, I cannot take credit for a smile that evolves from minimal effort as a result from ones own beauty. :yh_flower :D
