You want to know why the Native Americans didn't have weapons and the Europeans did? Simple...grains and domesticated animals.
With those you can settle down get out of the hunter / gatherer stage, and invent technology. Without them, like the Native Americans or the Bushmen, you are stuck.
Since the dawn of time humans have commited genocide upon one another. Just ask the Neanderthals.
So if anyone wants an apology for what the native Americans suffered...tough. History deals the cards.
Why would you torture yourself coming back here?

Yes, its true that there is still some of that old Irish-English tension sometimes, though its not like it used to be (well, the North is different). I have to say that in England I very, very rarely came across any prejudice against me for being Irish, though there were one or two unpleasant incidents, but there are always people like that everywhere. In Germany as well, I only ever had one or two instances of it, most people were very nice (even though they thought I was English unless I told them different). One time an old lady who much have been through the war did hit me and my friend on a U-Bahn (Metro) with her walking stick going "Raus, Raus, Britisher Schwinehunds!", I tried to explain to her that I was Irish and had never been a pilot in the RAF, but she was having none of it! :wah:

I too wonder at the difference between Americans and ordinary hunman beings. Where on earth did they develop such loud voices?

Just going to say this - I love the sense of humour, the love, the compassion and the friendship being displayed daily here by everyone, whatever their nationality. Yes, we have cultural and language differences, yes the Brits have a twisted sense of humour that others might find offensive, yes the Aussies laugh at themselves, yes the Yanks are perhaps more emotive than some of the others but all these differences are what makes it fun (and frustrating too sometimes)
Vive le difference.

And yes, Imladris!!!
Galbers - I don't actually think it was anti-English feeling we encountered, really, so much as a bit of reticence at the appearance in small villages of a couple of strangers. Then when they found out we were Aussies, strangers immediately turned into friends. It was great. But that was years ago. I'm hoping to spend a few weeks in Ireland this May !!!

I've got austrian relatives, now you think the irish and english and scots are bad you should hear them once they start on about the germans. Come to that have you heard a frenchman on the subject of their nearest neighbours or the italians. Going through the italian borders is great fun we get waved through but the italians always seem to stop the german cars if they want to do a check. You can just see the little smile as they do it.
Come to think of it if americans heard the way europeans bang on about each other they would think ww3 was about to start. Come to that Try asking an indian what they think of pakistanis, not so much love hate as hate hate.
Why is it you fell free to take the **** out of every other nationality and they reciprocate with gusto but have to be sensitive around americans in case they take it seriously and you offend the poor dears..

The question is this--why would anyone wish to insult citizens of an entire nation because they disagreed with that nation's policies, etc? Why would anyone be so unsophisticated as to be unable to separate the government from the people themselves?
Really, gmc...your bias is obvious.

That's exactly the kind of thing I mean. You seem to be unable to distinguish between being teased and being insulted. Why do you assume because your foreign policy gets slagged to bits that it means everybody hates americans? Why would anyone be so unsophisticated as to assume criticism of a government entailed criticism of the people themselves?
Say what you like about TB most british people would probably agree with you and very few would automatically assume that the criticism meant you didn't like the british.

+++++++++++++ "TEASE" to disturb or annoy by persistent irritating or provoking; to attempt to provoke to anger, resentment or confusion (Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary.)
I've lived long enough to have seen MANY people make remarks they meant exactly as stated and then INNOCENTLY declare that they were "only" kidding...or, in your case, the most honest word....TEASING.
I suggest you use a "smilie" if you're genuinely trying to be amusing, gmc.

But if you use a smiley you give the game away. Teasing assumes a certain level of sophistication - no, wrong word - knowledge is maybe better, in the teasee.
