Indeed, and how many British people go around spouting "Hamlet?" How many Irish people can quote "Joyce?", Come on, you are just embarrassing yourself now.

Not many working class in the case of Hamlet. That's my point. Can't you see?

Of the list you gave I knew around half of them, and I am well read. Most people are not as educated as you and so have different opinions. I am not embarassed at my lack of education.

I regard the whole of humanity as my brothers and sisters. We British are mongrels anyway, part Celt, part Roman, part German, part Norse, part French. I'm of Dutch decent. So that one won't work.

Ones from the US. Mexicans are seen as sleeping propped against the wall wearing sombreros and ponchos, Canadians are seen as lumberjacks and mounties.

I may have made the point somewhere in this thread or another similar one that we are looking through peepholes at America - and the same goes for other countries of course. And what is reported in our media (as opposed to being presented to us in US-originated media) is usually something extreme anyway. Thankfully there are media such as the NY Times online and while I might not always agree with it at least it's more balanced than that travesty of journalism, Fox News.

Fox News has a republican agenda.

What planet are you on? UK citizens are amongst the most travelled on the planet, with some 85% of the population owning passports. It's very rare to meet someone who has never been abroad and a surprising number have visited the US and do so regularly. The idea that ordinary people are knuckle dragging numpties that believe everything they see on TV is a true and accurate picture is so ridiculous as to be risible. Most ordinary working class people of my acquantance would tell you not to be such a patronising twit and the more literate of them-especially the horror fans will have at least heard of poe.

By way of contrast less than 20% of americans don't own a passport (correct me if I'm wrong) which rather begs the question i asked earlier why are so many convinced they will get their heads kicked in for being amercan in a foreign country. Whose telling them this cos it can't be from personal experience.?

Like it or not, people have preconceptions about all different types of people. People with glasses are seen as intelligent but may not be, people with mohicans are seen as rebellious but may be vicars for all we know. Until you meet an individual you cannot judge but cannot help having preconcieved ideas.

Ok, then why not have just titled this thread "Why Do Many Countries See Each Other as Inferior?" Since it's not just about America. America has general views of certain countries as well, as you might know already, maybe deserved, maybe not.

Again I put it to you: whose fault is this? I would say it's that of the working class people you speak of, who aren't educating themselves on American culture. People from all US walks of life read Poe and other great literaries; I smell a stereotype.

I don't rely on Jackie Chan movies to educate me about China so why would anybody judge my country's cultural ways on a fictional cartoon character or some bimbo stripping on Jerry Springer? :wah: It's not washing, Caesar.

LOL! I must admit to having enjoyed this interlude. Since I obtained my very first passport at the age of 40, I concede GMCs point. But in defense, it took me that long to explore my side of the world.

However, since broadening my horizons by traveling further afield, I have found my host country most hospitable. And my presence here as an american has been most well received. I take enormous pleasure in living amongst my British brethren. So I take comfort in my personal experience of living abroad, that as whole, most folks have more in common than not.

This is probably because we only see your media and not the reality of life in America.

Arrogance is abundant throughout the world, we dont have the market cornered there. We/me/my family/the people I know are pretty simple. We work hard, we give everything we earn to the bank to pay for housing, we raise children, and we hope the people we elect into office will do the right thing.

American govt. really has very little to do with how we live our personal lives. The people I know are generally nice. And peaceful, we dont want to rule the world, we just want to live reasonably happy lives and I think we wish well for others. We/I/the people I know dont hate black people, Muslims, Hindus or even Hare Krishnas. I feel safe in saying most of us dont like war and we dont feel good about the state of Africa. We try to help. We give. We pray. We love our Higher Power whatever that may be. And most of all I think for the most part were pretty humble. Its what I see in my day to day life.

I am not using those name to prove what a clever boy I am, that would be gauche, I am just pointing out that categorizing the peoples of the U.S. based on popular television shows and the opinion pages in newpapers, which would have people believe that Americans in general are overweight, moronic, and gun toting bible bashing lunatics is as fallacious as saying that all Germans are corpulent beer-swilling Nazi's, or that English men are all repressed homosexuals with an empire complex, or that Irishmen are drunken violent mammy's boys, its all just the same old xenophobic claptrap, its just that the Americans are the latest recipients of it, because of, well I don't know why, but mostly because people think that TV is real life, it isn't, its show buiness, including the 24 hour rolling news channels.

Just as an aside, I am well educated, however, I was born the son of Irish immigrants and grew up on a sink council estate in Birmingham during a recession, luckily I have lived in societies such as the U.K. and Ireland where it was possible for me to make my own choices about what I wanted to do with my life and I decided to go to university and study science, which I did, and this capitalist society that I lived in helped and supported me in that, if I had been born in say Pakistan, or China I am sure my prospects would have been a lot worse. There are just as many (if not more opportunities) to achieve such things in the States, if you are wise, lucky, and work at it.

America was founded on certain principals and ideals reacting to the terrible religious, political, and economic repression that Europeans had back in the old world, by and large that experiment has been a tremendous success, and the U.S. has prospered. Its no Utopia, but so what?, where is there a perfect country anywhere, or has there ever been one, or will there be one? No. The people who founded the United States were both idealists and realists, they created a system that yes provided freedom, but also one that actually worked for more than 6 weeks (229 years later its still going). I am not here to be a cheerleader for the USA, its not my country, Ireland is, but I can recognize cant and hypocrisy when I see it, and lately thats all I see getting thrown at the U.S., (there are justified criticisms of the place, sure, and its leaders), but if you look in any way objectively at the U.S. its hard to deny that basically its a great country, and its people are as good/bad, nice/nasty, clever/stupid as the citizens of any other country.

What this debate really is about is how people's perceptions of everything in the modern world are basically based on television programs, its a depressing reality.

So nice to see two of my friends here!! G'day Lulu, g'day Kathy !!!!!!!!

I stayed up really late late night.. went out first to a late showing of Casino Royale - and then kept on boogying! Oh man it was the best Bond I've seen since I lost my heart to the old Sean!!! I still need a cold shower every couple of hours while contemplating those deep, brutal and yet somehow sensitive, blue eyes.:sneaky:

Gonna go grab a short nap - or I won't make it beyond supper.

Catch you both again very soon, I hope.

Americans - US - had better start showing their strength and stand up for all who are fighting for our strength and freedom..

Bush has ruined our image, as far as I'm concerned. We've lost our allias, and Bush had made the US look weak. This Iraq war is a son's need to complete his fathers war - to make his daddy proud. HOW PROUD ARE YOU??

Why are Americans Unpopular - you need to ask..?? The US financed Sadam

Hussiam with amo & gun & power to fight the Shah of Iran and now we're trying to convict him. Why are American unpopular - you need to ask??

If Osama Binladen is hiding in the mountains - then we need to level the mountains - show are strength get our soldiers home and call it a day..

Hussiam with amo & gun & power to fight the Shah of IranWhere in God's name to people get their bloody information from? This is recent history! It still gets turned on its head and made incomprehensibly fictional. The Shah of Iran was in exile, deposed and out of power, before Saddam Hussain became President of Iraq. Neither country came anywhere near fighting each other until the eighties. I'm not getting at you, Patsy, I'm getting at the drivel which informs Americans only by way of a lethally biased media which spoon-feeds intentionally filtered "news" to the masses and leaves actual history buried in a grave.

What else has been a total inversion of the truth in this thread, since I've been triggered into commenting? The idea that "American Aid feeds the world" springs to mind. American Aid is primarily money set aside to bribe countries into selecting American goods, primarily high-tech and armaments - a discounting mechanism would be a good way of describing it. The actual food dispatched abroad is one of the chief reasons for the collapse of local agrarian economies and destroys the market value of cash crops for local producers, putting them into destitution. If it stopped tomorrow, and food exports from the US were only allowed out at full cost, the third world would heave a huge sigh of relief and start to rebuild its farming base knowing that it wouldn't be unpredictably undercut from one year to the next. Food aid is a nefarious interference in the internal affairs of other countries, economic aid is a nefarious interference in the internal affairs of other countries, propping up the economies of "allies" in the Middle East is a nefarious interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and this thread continually has "aid" put forward as benificent. It's nothing of the sort. When it comes to disaster relief efforts, which is a minor affair by comparison, everyone joins in, America included, how could anyone not. Dumping food and discounted weaponry is nothing to do with disaster relief.

Peace Freak - its better than someone bragging about owning 8 plus guns for whatever reason..

Obviously this friction/war started way before 911 as I stated in my statement..

This isn't about apple pie - its a confused and unnecessary war - and the US is unpopular for it.. Don't flip nouns around to defuse the issue. You don't own a machine gun ? your not with it..

I understand - the media exposes very little -and many live by that . My point exactly - my nephew was killed and the story was so turned upside down, that it was impossible to turn it right side up. But as far as US being unpopular - our war - our reasoning, doesn't even make sense to the US..
