What is going on here?

I leave my computer for 1 1/2 days and we're back in a mess again :-4

I'm not gonna let all this crap really get to me

Even though it is pretty sad :-1

I love Nomad and I love Lulu2 and I'm personally shocked about the PM.

Can't we all play nice, with a little sex talk thrown in the mix? :p

Just to be clear (and then I'm done with this thread) there were NO previous private messages to or from this person. Ever. I opened a private message and read an insult. Believe me, being called a pig, without any previous conversation, isn't a compliment.

Why did I post it openly on the board? Because, after the recent threads complimenting this person's good nature, etc, I was amazed at the level of anger in it and I consider that unsolicted email to be HARASSMENT!

I'm formally (and publicly) making the statement that I wish no contact with this person. Any future communication (other than an apology) will be considered the second incident of HARASSMENT.

Wasn't there a discrepancy about some being able to manipulate PM messages to make it appear that they were sent by the person displayed in that very same message, while the person in question had no idea about it in the first place?...

I suppose my next question is, have you confronted the person whom sent you this "PM", and have you discovered not only if it were actually sent by them, but the nature of intent as well?

I would hate to think you would post a PM on the open board without having 100% knowledge of it being from that person exactly.

Well.. way I see it you got a couple options here Lulu...

A) Ask wny Nomad did this and open a discussion..

B) Take Floppy's advice.. (this is the course of action I totally agree with)

C) go formal with your complaint to the powers that be.

But.. I do have to say.. using a PM to start a thread that you know is gonna be volatile.. dunno if I would have done that. It really is an issue between you and Nomad.. and by taking it to a public arena you give the impression that you can't either handle this like an adult.. and deal with it privately.. or you are trying to start a shi*storm..

kk.. nuff said..

i'd like to clear a misconception being promulgated. more often than not, 'guests' are web crawlers. the more active the thread, the more crawlers will descend on it. the connections tend to be brief, as they're just grabbing the new info then moving on to the next thread or site. when there's a flurry of posts in one thread, you'll see the guest 'list' grow proportionally. but again, the guest connections only linger briefly.

suggesting that those connections by 'guest' are some sort of exigent plotting going on is paranoia. the reality is far more mundane.

I note that the guest count might register one or two when a thread's in a burst of activity and I agree that crawlers are involved to that extent. You'll remember the wind-up visitation over December, with tasting dogs in Korea? That had a similar bump in guests too. That was the visitors' friends who were discussing it on their home board. You'll remember the Frank Discussions on December 7th last year? That had a similar bump in guests too. It has a very specific profile and it differs from background bot visits. Besides, it seems pointless to say that the bump in guests earlier today wasn't the result of foreign interest of non-members - it happens in those numbers to controversial threads with off-site involvement but not in those numbers to equally active threads that lack controversy.

Suggesting that those connections by 'guest', in those numbers, exclusively on threads with that interest, are some sort of coincidental bot activity going on is deflection. the reality is far more interesting.

you determined that figure based upon what factual details? perhaps it was inadvertent when claimed "might register one or two" - a momentary lapse. would you like a moment to rethink that, and perhaps clear the air and acknowledge that your claim of "one or two" is a fabrication, based upon no facts or experience you can claim - absolutely none at all? i'd be grateful. as someone who was formerly an administrator of forumgarden, and had intimate knowledge of such matters - you know, actual factual information pertaining to the point in contention - i think it takes a pretty fair bit of chutzpah to make unsubstantiated claims such as these.

the 'reality' you are claiming intimate knowledge of is of your own fabrication. as i said, "more often than not, 'guests' are web crawlers", and you've no basis of any kind for countering it. you have access to the system's logs? you can track visitor IP's? i'd be awfully surprised if you do. while i no longer have access to the logs and system statistics, i was intimately aware of the specific facts of the matter for nearly two years, and unless we are to believe that the web crawlers have dramatically changed their mechanisms (they have not), your claims to some understanding of the 'reality' are, quite simply, so much hot air.
